its probably junk, just take it to a parts store and have it tested. Ive learned to have my starters, alternators checked before I leave the parts stores, Ive had 2 bad alternators, and 1 bad starter. Right out of the box. jim

Thank jim i was reading the mad site and they were talking about a one wire alt .Does a one wire alt also have the 1+2 plug ins mine came with a plug and i poped it out.I even tried to voltage sense it right at the alt and it didnt change the voltage at the alt was reading the same as the battery. The only thing that gave me my 14.5 volts was to switch around my 1+2,but that took a drain off my battery and heated up thre alt.i only did this as a check and disconnected it within a few minutes.I checked all connections all the way to the fuse box .My only other guess besides the alt is bad is i used dielectric grease at the bulkhead connectors and cleaned them would stray voltage travel through the grease?I did reclean it up the best i could. The other modifications that i made was to cut yellow wire off the starter and remove the white cloth wire off the old coil (HEI NOW)and behind the fusepanel i cut the pink wire that went to the white cloth coil wireand connected a 12ga wire to the hei. Also could the pos battery term that goes to the starter touch the purple wire and screw things up ,i ordered taylor seel braided wires and the ears that connect to the starter are a little long and stick out toward the purple wire on the solonoid.Even so i still should get 14.5 volts at the alt.PS Thanks Greg U for your help ,I usually find out my mistakes or can figure things out ,but this is driving me nutz,I ended up missing our car show this year oh well Thanks for the test tips greg i figured id post this out here to see if anyone else has had this much fun.

Usually yes. Not all 1 wire alternators can be wired as a 3 wire. If yours was originally a 1 wire, try it without the 1+2 plug ins. If it still won't charge, its probably junk and time for a new one. I have always had good luck with Powermaster alternators, and many of them can be wired as a 1 or 3 wire.

I think it was all of them ,thats why its chrome now, from 1 billion trying to figure it out it polished up real nice.Maybe my craftsman wrenches violated the magnectic field being of pure steel!
huflung-dung...it's in the northern more industrial part. near bannedcok.
