: Broken glass in swimming pool
Don_Lightfoot Jul 20th, 07, 11:30 AM We had a wicked storm come through here overnight. Our glass top from the patio table was shattered, with pieces found up to the edge of the pool. Is there any way to see or locate glass that might have gone in the pool? Appreciate it.
SS_Dave Jul 20th, 07, 11:43 AM I would think those under water pool vacumes that work off the pump would pick it up. Vacume for a couple hours and then invite the neighbor kids over. ;)
1966_L78 Jul 20th, 07, 11:55 AM I think I'd sweep the bottom carefully (slowly) into one spot, and then see whats there... Maybe a couple of sweepings...
1970SS502 Jul 20th, 07, 12:07 PM If you have a liner DO NOT SWEEP. I had the EXACT same thing happen to us about two years ago. I turned off the pump (didn't need glass going through the whole system) and I tried to gently sweep everything into one area. At first it all seemed fine but I later found that I had put a small slice in my liner that quickly degraded into a full blown leak. I ended up forking out a couple K getting a new liner installed. I did go to the thickest liner available (10 year material) and bought a wrought iron patio table. If I had to do it again, I would have sent my oldest down there with his scuba gear to clean the mess up.
If your pool is not the liner type, I would do as Tony said and sweep.
chevelless1 Jul 20th, 07, 12:36 PM Use an underwater light source (underwater flashlight??) at night to reflect the glass so you can see it ??????

Interesting problem. The flashlight idea sound like it might work.
ZZ69chevelle Jul 20th, 07, 1:33 PM get a laser pointer. $3.88 at Walmart. When the beam hits a reflective surface it scatters on it. It'll take a while though.
1badss396 Jul 20th, 07, 4:13 PM Don you might want to try one of these called Leaf Gulper Pool Vacuum
http://images.smarter.com/product_image_b/32/50/9319350.jpg
if the peices of glass is small. I would not try and vacuum the glass up unless they are small peices with your pool pump system.
Was the glass tempered?
If it was tempered glass no big deal they should all be small peices in the pool and not sharp I have vacuumed lots of glass out of pools.
ChaosEnvy Jul 20th, 07, 4:13 PM water and glass have the same refractive/reflective (one of those) properties as water, the glass will be invisible. I'd say vac, or simple jump in there and go from one end to the other slowly and pick out the pieces.
Big D
1badss396 Jul 20th, 07, 4:31 PM You will see the glass better at night with the light on or during the day looking at an angle you will see it also.
I think Don just needs to move the ice burgs out of the way and get his a$$ in the pool and get-er-done, LOL:D
Don_Lightfoot Jul 20th, 07, 5:46 PM Thanks for all the fine suggestions guys, it is appreciated. We will obviously tread "lightly".

Well Brad, it was cold enough here this morning for that to be a possibility
SS70ElCaminoOwner Jul 20th, 07, 6:24 PM One other thought. I am sure this is not the first time glass has gotten into a pool. You might check with your local pool supply and see if they have a solution to the problem?????????

Don, tell the truth, you've been drinking that beer that comes in clear bottles again. You got carried away and smashed a bottle or two and are not sure if any went in the pool, and now you need help tring to fix a problem that could have been avoided if you had stuck to cans,

or real beer in a brown bottle. :beers:
