I have what appears to be a 700 R4 Trans in my 70 El Camino.
The casting nos. are 8663549
The stamped nos. appear to be 13 278 03240.
All the ID sites I've been to don't have info about the numbers, only the pan configuration. How would I know if it's a 700-R4, 4L60 or 4L60E?
Thanks
John

700-R4 and 4L60 are one and the same. Same thing, different name.
4L60E is similar but will have a round larger connector facing up on the passenger side.
700-r4 will have a 4 pin connector facing out on the drivers side and provisions for a TV cable hookup on the pass side near the bellhousing/dipstick area.

actually, a 4l60 is an upgraded 700r4- i think they went to that designation in the early 90's. i learned from the GMPP tc lockup kit i bought a few years ago that some of them have a 5 pin round connector instead of the usual 4 pin, but i've never seen one. i think that was a 93 only deal.

There was no difference in the trans, GM changed its nomenclature across the division for transmissions in the late 80's.
A 4L60 and 700-R4 are the same thing.

Thanks Guys. I have a connector facing up on the driver's side. Would this be a 700 R4? There is nothing hooked up to the connector.
