: Driver SIDE HEADERS! 454/ Full Length
feedphillipnow Feb 23rd, 05, 11:02 PM Ive pulled my steering column, column shift linkage (had to anyways) and the oil filter was in the way, and the driver side header STILL will not go in, im feeding it through the bottom. I nearly killed myself tonight  not sure if anyone has any magic ideas, I'll probably get it tomorrow....
AdamLym Feb 23rd, 05, 11:37 PM I always lay the header in the car before I drop in the motor. Its near impossible even with a small block to feed in the drivers side header with the engine installed. You may be able to unbolt the drivers side motor mount and jacke the motor up far enough to get it in.
Good luck
feedphillipnow Feb 23rd, 05, 11:49 PM Thats what my neighbor was saying, I think I may have to do that. I'll try taking out the driver side mount first, if thats a no go I'll unbolt the tranny from the block and I may have to pull it up a couple inches, this sucker is meeeean

Ditto.... ;)
Adman Feb 24th, 05, 1:17 AM Exactly what i had to do. Disconnected the crossmember for a little more life. Got it in eventually.
69shovel&90454SS Feb 24th, 05, 1:46 AM It's possible to get it in with a pit or a hoist from the bottom but on jackstands forget it.
Rick Bandy Feb 24th, 05, 9:02 AM On both of our cars we have to pull the oil filter and unbolt the drivers side motor mount and jack it up high enough to put a 2x4 under the motor mount. Then slip the header in and reverse the order. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
JRS70LS5 Feb 24th, 05, 11:38 AM With hooker headers drivers side went right in,passenger side I had to lift the motor a few inches.
Skier_Bob Feb 24th, 05, 1:28 PM I feel your pain, man. I installed Dynomax headers on my 454. Once I removed the pin holding the Driver's side motor mount and raised the engine a bit, the header slipped right in.
I can't remember if I had to remove the oil filter too, but what the heck, take it out and stop the suffering. I did have to remove the oil pressure sending unit on the block.
feedphillipnow Feb 24th, 05, 2:40 PM Yeah I will definately have to remove the motor mount, I think I'll be fine then. Funny how certain brands do and dont work  Well, not funny but you know. I already pulled off the steering column and oil filter so why not the mount graemlins/clonk.gif You know, when I pulled the oil filter off I forgot the engine was full of oil, but none came out... I thought it would poor out through the filter hole, doesnt work that way?
Finally Feb 24th, 05, 2:58 PM All the oil is sitting down in the bottom of the pan if the engine has been sitting for a while. I installed my dynomax from the bottom without undoing the engine mount. The front has to be really high off the ground so you can get the right angle. I didn't undo the steering shaft either. Just wrapped the header in a thin blanket and pushed and twisted. That was on a 70 396. Like I said though the front has to be really high off the ground.
feedphillipnow Feb 24th, 05, 3:01 PM Yeah, Ive actually got it to where it lines up with all the head ports except the last night, I think its locked up someplace down on the corner of the block, I cant see it but it definately wont go without taking off the mount. I'll be doing this tonight after work if it isnt raining, I kept the plastic on but still scratched her up a little bit :(
Finally Feb 24th, 05, 3:10 PM If you have it that far you should be all set. Make sure the collector end isn't hanging up on something. Do you still have the exhaust in? Could it be hitting the pipe?
feedphillipnow Feb 24th, 05, 3:39 PM Hmmm, the only thing at this point is that I cant get the car high enough, and since I welded in new floors they might be a hair lower, leaving me without that tiny edge I need to pop it through.

Well lift the engine and have it, it's not that hard. Just be carefull, don't want to squish any fingers in there.
EDIT: Use a 2x4 or other suitable support to keep the engine up so it can't fall.
feedphillipnow Feb 24th, 05, 4:29 PM 2x4 sounds good to me, thanks for all the tips guys, im sure ill get it in tonight.
Bob West Feb 24th, 05, 9:13 PM If the front of the car is high enuff, and oil filter removed, my dynomax headers slid in with a little twisting. I didnt have to unbolt the motor mount or remove the column.
feedphillipnow Feb 24th, 05, 10:51 PM ITS IN!
I did go a little nuts...
Ah, finally smile.gif
feedphillipnow Feb 25th, 05, 5:12 PM Are you guys all running floor shifters with these headers? For those w/ the dynomax or any other full length, I havent attempted to put the shifter linkage back together yet, I currently still have the column shifter. I do want a floor shift and eventually a 4 or 5 speed. Pro Rachet B&M would be nice.
Finally Feb 25th, 05, 7:17 PM I have a floor shifter with dynomax. Is there a question there? Not sure what you want to know.
feedphillipnow Feb 26th, 05, 2:15 PM It said most applications wouldnt work with a column shifter, I havent tried putting mine back on but it looks like it will just barely clear.
Finally Feb 26th, 05, 2:28 PM Oh, now I understand. Sorry I can't help you there.
