I have a 64 Malibu with 327 and TH350. The person I bought the car from was using a coat hanger to hold the muffler up. I want to put dual exhaust in but have some questions. Does anyone have any recommendation on who to get parts from and what to get? Also, I don't want to put headers on at this point but would like to eventually, does it matter what I buy now?.I want to spend around $400 with installation done by a muffler shop. Sorry if these questions are too general but this is my first classic and I'm learning as I go. Thanks.

actually most shops will custom make your pipes and put em in i had my last car done for $150 w/turbo's you should be able to find it for $300-$350 with flo-masters and much cheaper with other mufflers.

Milo,
It really depends on whether you are seeking a performance setup or something more OEM. I've got Hooker Super Comp headers, 2 chamber FlowMasters, and 3" Torque Tech pipes all the way out the back (Yeah Come On!!!). Of course, my car is a big block and likes to breathe.

Have a shop install it, find an independent one in your area that caters to rodders. They will do it right, fix it if it comes loose and it won't cost much more (if not cheaper) than ordering the parts yourself. Don't make it too large diameter or your low end torque will suffer.

Also Milo, go with the aluminized pipes, they wont rust for a long long time, if at all and they a re not much more expensive. i bought 2 flows for 50.00 a pop and had them welded on with custome pipes and tip for 175.00 for a gt or 275.00. and since the flows are aluminized, my exhuast will probally outlast my chevelle, well, maby not ill fix my car till the day i die!

my experience has been similar. i have a stock 350 and i just had flowmasters installed, no headers, and aluminum pipe. i found a good muffler shop (after calling several places), and this particular shop had the best price 4 what i wanted. the guy was familiar with working on Chevelles. total package was $400 out of the door. when i dropped the car off, it sounded like a sick puppy, when i picked it up it was growling like a angry lion. no problems, no leaks, etc, and if happens gets loose i can just go back, no charge. pretty good deal 4 me since i don't have time/room 2 hang an exhaust system. also, going this route i did not have 2 order by catalog and wait 3 weeks for delivery.

Thanks for the tips. I called a couple of local muffler shops. Both quoted $350 +tax for Dynomax Super Turbos with aluminized pipe from manifold to rear. Does this price seem reasonable?

Milo,

The price is about average. You should like the sound when it is done.

The price was $350 out the door for my setup. (No headers, 2 1/4 in custom bent aluminized pipe and 2-baffle FlowMasters.) Check to see if that includes a cross-over, either an "X" or "H" pattern.

Milo, that's a pretty decent price. I just got my dual exh. setup on my 64 w/283&pg for $420 out the door. Came with 2" aluminized pipes and Dynamax turbo mufflers, hangers and clamps from a reputable local muffler shop in the Bay Area of Calif. Good luck. Tony.
