Hi, I would like to buy a better coil for my HEI but I'm not sure what's good out there. I'm looking at the Hypertechs and Pertronix coils and modules. It seems like MSD is to expensive because it looks like you get the same stuff from other companys for 40-50 bucks less. Or I can make my coil external, what's better? thanks, anything info. would help.

I have an Accel Supercoil on top of my HEI..works fine for me on this car,and have had it on other HEI's too.I will say a seperate coil is the best choice do to the heatbuild up of the in-cap coild design of the stock HEI..MSD makes the adapter for the HEI.Just a matter of personal preference IMHO and what you like to spend money on ;)
Hi Perf. ignition parts always have the most hype and least return..again,JMHO

less then a $100 bucks. Would I need to get anything else besides the coil and MSD cap?

i installed a pertronix cap, rotor, coil and module and went to napa and got a new connector and capacitor. all together less than $90. it made a huge difference in idle quality.... now its very smooth. didn't notice much (if any) in acceleration.

Don't bother changing the coil unless you also install a low-resistance carbon button. I've seen too many melted distributor caps to use anything else, even for stock applications.
