: To cut or not to cut

Okay. I just rebuilt my front end and installed the Moroso trick front springs. They replaced the old wore out stock springs. The car now sits 3 inches higher then I want it to. Moroso says you can only cut one full coil but I don't think that cutting one full coil will lower the front 3 inches. Note: the car has now been sitting on the new springs for 5 days.

So, do I cut one full coil and see what happens or do I buy a set of 2 inch drop spindles and then possibly cut some off the coil spring. Suggestions please. Thanks.

As long as you are not bottoming out, I dont see why you couldnt cut more than 1 coil. A coil will probably give you about 2" drop. Do a little at a time and see where you are at. Alot of people talk about the springs "settling". I'm not a firm believer, but have no data to support that. Make sure you tightened all your bushing bolts with the suspension loaded so there is no preload which would cause your car to sit high. Like I said, cut a coil, check it. If it needs a little more I'm sure it will be fine.

Maybe I'll try that if a coil will give me about 2 inches. I spoke to a guy a little while ago and he too told me a coil is worth about 2 inches. If it works that will save me $216. Thanks.

Just an update. 3 days ago I pulled the springs and cut 1 full coil off. It does appear, for the Moroso springs, that cutting one full coil is worth about 2 inches. I would like to go a little lower but I can live with it. Can always go lower in the future if I want. Plus, I figure the longer the car sits on these new springs they will sag some more. Thanks for the help.

Glad you went ahead and modified it. I doubt you will notice any "sag". However, give it a few weeks, if you still want it lower, pop it out and cut them. You should be able to do it much faster now that you are an expert!

just a question: do you have the springs located correctly in the lower A-Arms? there's two holes drilled in the spring pocket, the end of the coil is supposed to be tween those holes.

There's no reason you couldn't cut off another half coil to get it where you want it.

Just cut 1 coil off my fronts also which dropped it about 2". Seems to ride the same for me. Only tricky part was making sure they were seated correctly on top and bottom. The springs are CPP 1-1/2" drop springs which weren't enough drop for me. I'm stoked with how the car looks now!

On a standard spring, ie not drag springs, cutting coils will also increase the spring rate due to progressive rating.

Just curious, what rate springs did you go with for your car? I looked at them recently, and they had many options, from 190# up to 250 if I remember right.

They're definitely in there right. I took a little time to make sure. It also took a little fighting with the springs. I may cut another 1/2 coil to drop it another inch. Not sure yet.

I used the Moroso 250 lb springs which was kinda in between the small block (240#) and big block (260#) for my car.

Thanks for the reference on the spring rate. My old H.O. Racing springs were 550#, and I'm not sure what the stock 66 BB springs I have in it now are. If the 250#springs are raising your BB monte, they'll be wayyy to strong for my 64.

Thanks,

Devin

.. It also took a little fighting with the springs.

Springs are a PITA. Even with a nice spring compressor I got it's a PITA.
