I've finally got the stuff (pump/brackets/box/rag joint/pitman arm) to convert to power steering. I'm sure there is a correct way to set up the new box and pitman arm so that everything is correct. I just don't know what it is. Anyone got some advise and guidance?

Thanks.

There is not much to it. Just put the parts in place and enjoy.

That seems easy enough...even for me.

Thanks.

"I've finally got the stuff (pump/brackets/box/rag joint/pitman arm)"

Where did you get the PS pump brackets for the pump and the pitman at decent prices?

I'm doing the conversion for a 396 and was looking for an all inclusive kit -or am I dreaming??

When I built my 66 I changed over to power steering. A friend gave me a close ratio box and since I was using the long water pump brackets that came on the 454 I ended up using the pump from that. Everything fit great and works good. My son's 65 had original power steering and we also used the long water pump brackets, it's now becoming a track car with the Vega manual box.

ITZA66,

I got my power steering pump and brackets for $40. I spent another $15 for a pump rebuild kit. I have a 454 with a long water pump in my '66. The motor was used from around '79 through the late 80's. A local guy told me that the power steering pump and brackets from any chevy big block car or truck from '70 until the late 80's will work. My set up was out of a BB truck. I got a factory power steering box w/pittman arm on e-bay for $90. I'm on a budget so I couldn't afford going with all new or aftermarket stuff.

On mine - 1966 Chevelle with 1987 305:
mid 70's Monte Carlo steering box - swap meet $35
mid 70's truck big block PS pump brackets - salvage yard $5
power steering pump from the auto parts store for the same truck - $40?
rag joint from the auto parts store - $25
pitman arm at swap meet - $5
new belt - < $10
Total $110

If you don't need it right now, there are deals out there to be had. Hit the swap meets, car cruises and salvage yeards and ask around - people have this stuff laying around. Also, the parts inter-chage list on this site is a great source of what you might need.

I have a 69 malibu with manual steering all original and never rebuilt. There is a lot of play in the steering which takes the fun out of driving.

I am leaning toward a power steering conversion. It has a manual transmission and I would like to drive this car daily. I will be parking in a parking garage that requires maneuvering and some tight spots. It seems that making an S turn in a parking garage would really be improved with power steering.

I have two questions:

Should I do the conversion or would I be just as happy with a rebuilt manual box since it will improve all or most of the play that I am currently experiencing?

Any suggestions on where to get a good converstion kit? I don't really want to hunt swap meets and do this piece meal.

Vince, where did you get the parts you plan to use?
