: Wheel Studaphobia?
I was visiting with my car bud ysterday, checking out his progress on the Camaro. Nine second strip only ride. He has just install the rear end, and is running some very beefy 5/8" wheel studs. Conversation shifted to my ride and the fact that I am running 7/16 studs. He's convinced that I am nuts, that they will break, and cause alot of damage when they do. Now I got the "studaphoibia"
thing going through my mind. These are new Moroso studs, foot break, 10.5 slicks launching around 3800 pounds, hoping for 1.6 60' times. Should I pull the axels and have them drilled for some 1/2 studs? If I hear anymore horror stories I gonna have to do something so I can sleep at night. What do you guys think? What level of performance would the 1/2 inch studs be good for? 9" Currie rear end, detroit locker, 31 spline axels.
blazerbob Mar 6th, 05, 4:30 PM I'm running 1/2in on mine with 35spline axels on rear. Pulling 3800# and a 1.6 60' is going to take a big engine like 550hp+. Your combo is reasonable by looking at your sig of 1.77. Need lower gears, and more compression! I would be very happy running your combo on the street with occasional strip and 7/16 marginal. If doing any serious racing need to go with the big stud! At 600hp I'm fine with 1/2. Goodluck!
Sid Coleman Mar 6th, 05, 4:52 PM After watching my cousin's 68 shear all the studs off and drop at the starting line (VERY lucky-no quarter damage), I'd say go with the beefier studs! Compare the upgrade price to replacing a quarter panel.
His combo is: 3900lbs, 10.5" slicks, footbrake, 502/TH400/4.11 rear, running about 1.55 60's, 10.55s @ 131mph. All throttle, no bottle :D
Bob West Mar 6th, 05, 10:09 PM I ran 7/16" long studs for 3 yrs of full time racing and never a broken stud, have since upgraded to Moser axles with 1/2" studs for the new power.
ak69 Mar 7th, 05, 12:17 AM All right, 1/2" studs it is. No big deal, slide the axels out and down to the local shop, "Alaska Axel Builders". Then I can worry about some thing else. I figure the new pro systems Hp carb, the 4.11 gears, timing curve tweak and the fact that the car and driver both lost some weight over the winter, I will be dropping the 60 ft times and ET. Come on spring time, track opens Mother's day!!!
Bob West Mar 7th, 05, 7:33 AM Both of our tracks are officially open, weather permitting of course...Load er up and come on down Craig :D
Robert, I would love to do just that! My folks live around your neck of the woods, they have been reporting some nice spring like weather. It should be a good time of year for some "good air". When I visit my folks, I will have to look you up, check out the local action at your track!!!!!
