: 1970-1972
laffie Jul 16th, 07, 8:11 PM Hi everyone!
Well i'm new to this forum and i would like to buy a Chevrolet Chevelle ss between years 1970 to 1972. First of all, what are the differences between those models? Sorry for this newbish question but i'm only 14 years old...:(
well thank you very much!
p.s: nice forum!!:hurray:
Chuck Jul 16th, 07, 8:23 PM Hi Laffie. Welcome.
The 70 will be the hardest to find because it's the most popular. Most likely beyond a 14 year old's budget. I'd look at the 71 and 72 Chevelles. They have 2 headlights, where the 70 has 4. In the 70-72 years that an easy way to tell. The 71 and 72 have round tail lights in the bumper too. I think they are very cool looking. the 72 has mostly orange front turn signals while the 71 is more white. The younger guys get mostly 71 and 72s because they are more available and you can get an SS with a small block 350 which will be much easier on your budget.
You're a little young to be driving, don't you think? Good luck with your dream!
Chuck
laffie Jul 16th, 07, 8:34 PM well ty for fas reply! Also what is the difference between the malibu one and the SS one?
tx again
bowtie6872 Jul 16th, 07, 10:15 PM SS IS THE SPORT MODEL
out of your budget,,
the malibu is the same car but with more hipo engine..trainy/rearend(mostly)
71-72 bigblocks make less power than 70 small blocks..
big block cars will always cost more...
and eat gas, more that a kids budget can take, you want to drive it.. not, look at it..
look for a small block/automatic car..this will be the cheapest..and a v8
a/c cars cost more, if it's there.. unless you're gonna stay stock(unlikely) don't worry about it being a bu or a SS .. you can make it look and drive like a SS with parts offered from venders....
find the most solid(rust free car) you can..
if you find two cars one runs but has rust, and the other is solid, no rot(mostly) but doesn't run..
buy the nonrunner..
you''lll thank me later..
that is unless your in school for autobody..
:)
Autoengineer Jul 17th, 07, 2:23 AM I agree with the above posts. Go 71-72 small block non-SS. I noticed when I was Chevelle shopping, a lot of the big block cars were significantly more money and a lot of them were dogs anyways. I figured I would put in the engine I wanted at a later date. I had felt like the 70 fronts were nice because of the dual headlight setup, but I liked the taillights in the 71-72 better, so for me, as far as looks, it was a wash.

Now that IS funny, I don't care who ya are.
bowtie6872 Jul 17th, 07, 9:51 AM car test back in the day...
the 70 small block is faster than the (still powerfull) but not for a big block
71-72's
stock!!!!!!!!!!
and that means tires/etc too..
asmall blocks got a better chance to get the power to the ground than the weakest big block does on bias tires...
face it, big block cars where a pain to get to hook on the tires of the day(street tires) ..
if you got it out of the hole,, the one/two shift broke um loose..
sorry that (spinning the wheels) is not fast..
buddys friend has a 72 big block car..stock down to useing bias tires..
at a place know for street action, we taped(vid) the car on 3 runs
all three feathering the pedal out the hole, spin the tires for 3/4 of a turn.
then at the one/two shift(stock tranny settings/no shift ket, etc) spin the tires 3 full rev's before kinda hooking
the 2nd to 3rd shift was 1/2 spin the hook..
that is leaving alot on e.t. on the table..
my stock 70 350/350 spin out the hole 1/3rd rev' then hooked/ 1st to 2nd was a churp(spin about 1/8th rev, then hooked) 2nd to 3rd churp and tire movement without traction 4" of tread then hooked..
thatI'll het you down the track/stop light to stop light faster...
the sbc 70 was .09 faster than the big block
the big was a 2000 mile frest rebuild
mine was 78000 miles into it's life
sorry this is what we got. out of our bet..(I won,by the way /a c-note)
and the test of them when they where new say the same thing. most of them anyways.

sorry I just don't remember it that way....:noway:
BTW, you said the BB car used bias-plys...........what did YOU run DRs?
bowtie6872 Jul 17th, 07, 10:10 AM his tires
Wheelhop Jul 17th, 07, 10:14 AM So you taped yourselves dragracing on the street? Isn't that kind of like R Kelly videotaping himself with the minor?? |:)
bowtie6872 Jul 17th, 07, 10:23 AM don't get me wrong..
my chevelle I'm building now is bigblock... cause there is nothing like the neck snapping power(when you get it to the ground)
something tires back in the day didn't allow you to do..
mine now is a 488 (496 but 30 over not 60)
but with the tires and aftermarket parts out now.. I can get the power to the ground( I hope)
but when I owned the sbc car .. in the 80's it wasn't like now..
no hop bars/latter bars/ or tub it..was what you mostly had. unless you built your own parts..
tires even the best street tires where nothing like what we have now..
big blocks on bais tires(not slicks) not "dipped" in traction fluid..
but plan old bias tire.. are a handfull
after a while , you learn how to get it to almost hook/shift..
anmost like a stick 5.0 to much ,up in smoke..to little bog.. same here(mostly)
it's no matter..
the kid. that this post was for
(sorry about HIGHJACKING It)
can't afford(mostlikely) a big block car,,
so this doesn't matter to him..
getting his first chevelle is...
and him looking at smalll block cars will let him, maybe get one..
if he'll move up to the 73-75 cars he'll get one cheaper...
but be on his own as far as parts..other than drivetrain

it is a indust park..
that is locked up on weekends
I work there,so the owners ,let us test and tune there..
as long as it's only me and a few friend, we're good..
if I had a party of 12 there.. he'd stop it...
weekday nights people race there....
it's clean(no sand/etc) and nice rubber at the "line"
so no I'm not test/tune or in this case wining a bet.. on the street..
it's priv. property.
laffie Jul 17th, 07, 2:39 PM well tx for all the informations! I found a 70 malibu 307. Do you guys know whats a AC cobra 1966? Cause i built it with my dad and i learned alot about mechanic, it as 700hp!! its a supercharged 351

Congratulations.
I purchased my '72 when I was 15. Dang, that was 3 years ago, I need to get working.
I opted for a '72 because I was tired of seeing the usual '70.

Hmmmm where to start........CB07 has been over for about 5 weeks
'72 454 has more like 8.2 comp AND 104 more ci & about 100+ more hp & 150 more TQ. even though it may spin it can still run down a 350 in the 1320.
I did drive my 454 when it was bone stock & no stock 350 would have touched it......maybe an LT1.....maybe

I think he is confused between the 240hp LS-3 of the '72 model year and the 300hp 350 available in 1970.
He probably doesn't realize that they changed the way engines are rated. ;)
Blue71 Jul 18th, 07, 3:10 AM What do you want to do with it - fix it up for looks, racing, daily driving? Or just use it as-is?
You'll notice a LOT of Chevelles now have the SS racing stripes, and "SS" badges on them. That is common for NON-SS cars that people have made into replicas of SS cars, as the real SS machine is pretty rare (and valuable). The stripes and badges look great and are easy to do. But changing the engine and suspension to the SS setup is definitely more work, but great performance-wise.
I love the 71 and 72 look myself, especially the rear bumper. A 307 is a pretty small for a heavy car like that, but it will run. You'll find a LOT of 350 Chevelles out there, and tons of 350 engines you could put into that 307 engine, if you decide to upgrade.

no I know all about the gross and net change..
I also know the 72 454 is going through a th400, that waste more power than the th350 behind the 350 ..
also know..that in three runs.the big block didn't run faster than my 350
sorry,it didn't
and I should've said CB8 not 7
but no matter.. you all.. are taking me for a fool..
we ran um.. both stock.. different drivers..
he lost .. three times..
thats what we got.. you big block guy.. want to think of me as a fool. fine..
I kmow after he changed the rear gears I was dusted...but that wasn't stock..
and all you guys getting a good laugh, HAVE YOU RUN YOUR CAR!!!!
my 70 ran 13.96 at n.e.dragway
what yours run????????????
to be fair, mine was blueprinted, when rebuilt ..and built by a guy that runs in stock..
and had a 2500rpm stall verter in it by then..
Dean Jul 18th, 07, 7:34 AM One poor running big block vs one good running smalll block can't speak for anything but those two particular cars.
