This may be a noobie type question but I havent seen the light at the end of the tunnel!

I can't figure out the process of screws and bolts that you have to pull to get the gauges out of the dash. My speedometer is not working and I have already replaced the transmission gearing and speedo cable and still nothing. So Im tryin to get the guage cluster out so I can look odometer hook up in the back and see if the wear and tear of the cable has striped out the insides and is not spinning the speedo. (If that makes sense) Its the only other thing I could think of to do without throwing out a good chunk of CASH to get a new set of gauges.

If someone has a how to or just some tips and tricks to get that cluster out so I can look at the back of it. SHOOT ME SOME INFO!

Thanks for any and all help!

Anybody? Am I making sense in what I am asking or am I confusing everybody?

The easiest way to get the cluster out is to remove the dash. Do a search on "dash swap" and you will find all the info needed to easily remove and reinstall your dash. Once you have the dash out, it is very easy to remove the cluster. On the swept gauge cluster, the hardest part will be removing the wiring harness from the cluster where it connects the idiot lights. I ended up cutting mine since I was completely replacing the cluster with a Dakota Digital setup.

There are about 7-8 bolts holding the dash in, drop the steering column down to rest on the seat, remove those 7-8 bolts and drop the dash.
Its not that big of a deal.

I have some photos of the inside of the sweep dash panel; the whole meter section taken apart. Write to me if you need to see them for details before you go in. (Not the whole dash itself, just the components of the guages and the plastic housing....)

post on here if your speedo is junk, it might be alot easier finding a sweep dash speedo than you think, Ive given away 3 of them in the last couple years. jim

I replaced mine with a covans autometer set, I couldn't figure out how to get the sweep out properly so I took some huge pilers and snaped it into tiny pieces, took about 30min. Downside is it was completely destroyed, but I had no intention of ever using it again.

Click on my signature...I have the full dash R&R manual scanned in. Print it off High Res.

Good Luck

I haven't posted a WANT ad yet here, but may be in the market for a good 71/72 sweep dash with A/C.

I have the guages already, but the old dash itself got some serious damage when I was away on vacation, will need to replace it. Black preferred but can dye if needed... Thanks.
