I have a particularly baffling condition. Once in a while, and this is a rarity,(Happened maybe 5 time in the 3 yrs I've had it), my car seems to gain super strength. Under no particular circumstances my car seems to have more power/better response. I will start my car and it sounds normal, and when I go to drive, it just takes less pedal movement to go harder. And the car pulls harder. The next time I go to run it, it's back to its old self. I have a 72 chevelle malibu 307, automatic. Wish I knew what it was.. maybe something simple I could do to get that all the time? For the life of me I don't know what could cause these occurances.

are your secondaries opening? Chances are your advance weights are binding up.

Actually I assumed that you had a 4 barrel carburetor when I shouldn’t have, if you do have one, you mainly drive on the primaries which are the front 2 barrels and when you floor it the other two open up giving the engine more air and fuel.
The advance weights are centrifugal weights, they work as the engine rpms increase it advances the timing as well, if this does not happen the engine will be down on power. After time they can stick and not advance when the rpms increase however sometimes if conditions are right they will unfreeze, and advance to give you the extra power.
My suggestion would be to remove the distributor cap and rotor to ensure that they operate freely.

could the fuel filter have anything to do with it?

Assuming the car gets somewhat regular tune-ups/filters, I'd agree with Billy177 on the distributor weights/springs.
