Fix'in to put my BB together, heres what I got:
496ci,10:1,Merlin 310cc rectal heads(I know there not the prefered oval port heads, but they are ready to bolt on).Car weighs 3600lbs(with me),turbo 350,3000 stall,3:42 rear gears.Looking to be a street/strip ride.
Need your advice on a solid roller set up that would provide the best 3000 to 6500rpm power.
Thanks for any help.

70BB,

For the most power, reliability, and streetability, I'd use my 287/295R10. I'll have to post the Lunati part number later, my list is in the car and it's raining 'cats-n-dogs'.....
This cam is 287/295 at .020, 256/264 at .050, .660/.660 valve lift, and 110 LSA.
Some years back I had a 2nd Gen Camaro make the cover of PHR. This was a 10:1 509, 3000 SS, 3.9:1 gears, 3700 lbs, and this cam. He would drive the car 125 miles to the drag strip, run some 11.15s on throttle, and drive back. I'm thinking your 4.25" stroke might offset the 3.9 vrs 3.42 rear.
If this is too much lift or duration, I have a 285/295R10 with 250/260 at .050, .630/.630 valve lift, and 110 LSA. This cam makes over 590 BHP in a 10:1 468, about 6400. It will also run at racing RPM for 24 hours. I have used it as a daily driver for 23 years, and the 1st cam for over 15 years. Neither one is hard on valve train, either springs or lifters.
If you are concerned about idle, putting either cam on a 112 LSA improves the idle, etc.

Bill, the 50299LUN means it was a custom-cam grind, before it had its' own number---Which is 502A4LUN. How's it running?
70BB,
Any Lunati/Holley dealer should be able to order you this cam, 502A4LUN. If they claim they don't have that part number(It's only been out for a few months...), I can take your order, or Steve, who worked for me for 13 years. Our numbers are 901-365-0950, ext 126 for Steve, ext 135 for me. This cam is one of our favorites in the big block Chevy.

Gee, and I was thinking the same 276/84 grind I run, but the rollerized version.

Harold, the 285/295R10 1.) can you make one on a GenVI type core with a cast iron dizzy gear? and 2.) can they grind it on a 112. or is it something that 'on the shelf". 110 would keep cylinder pressure right, 112 would give back the smooth idle of the current Crane SR236.

#1 is most important, its that funky GenVI block.

UDHarold,
I found both those cams on the Lunati website.I think they show a 3000 to 7000 power range.Would I have to change my 3000 stall to say a 3500 stall?

Not running yet. The motor sits patiently on a stand in the corner of my garage since coming off the dyno. The '70 has been in the chassis and then went to the body shop. :(
Soon though, I hope...

Gene,

We can grind the 502A3LUN on a Gen VI, and it has the 112 LSA. Appartently the Gen VI cores we have can even go to 114 LSA. The 502A3LUN is the 276/284R12, 245/253 at .050, .660/.660 valve lift. The 287/295R can also be ground on a 112 LSA.

70BB, normally the 3000 SS converter works OK. The 3500 SS is a little faster at the strip, and if your 496 cids don't compensate enough for that 3.42 rear, the 3500 SS should.....

Harold, does the 502A4LUN like 92 octane and 10.5 CR aluminum Canfield heads? Kirk

Kirk,

To the best of my knowledge, we have never had any problem with them. I have 100's of them out on the street, different sorts of heads, and I have not heard complaints about fuel. The al heads are generally better, vs octane requirements. Anyway, if there was a problem, you can always pull the lash down to .016" or so, this closes the intake valve later and helps bleed off some cylinder pressure.
