Well there was a big discovery at work today. Theres a big block chevy sitting in a cradle in a lean-2. Well its a battle on whose going to get it, me or this other guy at work and hes just going to try to sell it, i want to build it for my dads 70 chevelle but i need to know what it is first. Heres the numbers i got off of it. T0512XAN, or T0612XAN is on the front passenger side block deck i couldnt tell if it was a 5 or 6 in the number. On the back drivers side of the block is: 3955274, the 3 could be an 8 but i couldnt tell. And there was also an E15 8. If anyone could tell me what it is i would really appreciate it. with my luck its a 366 truck motor but who knows, THANKS
Nick.

For future reference, I use the site listed below to identify BBC parts.

Tell the other guy it is a worthless truck 366 truck engine (which it is anyway). Then strip it down, use the 3.76" steel crank and the rods with new hypereutic cast pistons installed into a 2 bolt 454 block with some oval port heads for a great street 427 engine. That sounds like a good idea, but you can get a new 3.76 stroke crank pretty cheap so why go through the hassle!

I agree, a new crank is relatively cheap to buy. Just sounded like he wanted something to wrench on. So, if its there why not. I would personally go through the effort to take it apart, spend a minimal amount for mag. Odds are it will work out, save a couple of bucks on the way. I'm totally with you on the new parts. I'm just an old fashioned hot rodder at heart.

Hello-
Quick question........what is the average price for a crank, like the one you are talking about? I assume it's a steel crank.....?

Thank you-

Well by the time i got the motor out of the lean 2, beat it all apart, and got to the crank, im sure it would need to be reground and all that, and it probably wouldnt be worth it. I gotta get to hoppin on the Nova for power tour anyways graemlins/thumbsup.gif I was just hoping for a 427 or 454 block to start with for Dads 70' chevelle. Thanks for all the help guys.

ktownkid,

if you keep your eye on eBay, A used 396 crank can be had for about $100-150. Don't buy it if already 30/30 under.

Keep in mind all 396 cranks are internal balanced and most are steel!

Myself? I would just get a 454 4inch stroke std/std cast crank (GM) off ebay for $75.00. they are good for 600+ HP. Why lose torque when it's cheap, and why build a 427 when a 454 can be had?
