: want a 4spd. bad.. oponions.
Todd69SS Jun 13th, 00, 11:40 AM i got a 69 with a 396 and a t350, but to me the car just seems boring to drive sometimes. I know why, its the tranny i hate just pushing the shifter forward to change gears, it would be much more exciting to pop the clutch then slam the shifter back into second, third , and so on. i wanna swap in a 71' or later muncie , m20 or m21 i guess a m22 would work also if i could find one.
anyways i know that i would need a 32 slpine slip yolk, and shorten the driveshaft 1 inch, and move the crossmemeber forward a 1/4 inch.
has anyone done this swap? im not sure what all parts i would need and where i could get all the parts. does anyone know where i could get all the parts, trans, shifter, i mean everything i would need. im sure someone on here kows what all ill need, and how much of a pain in the ass it is to swap. If you have any information about this swap, please let me know i have no clue on what i need to do.
Thanks,
Todd

Gene Chas Jun 13th, 00, 12:12 PM Todd, run a search on this topic and also check the tech reference section www.chevelles.com/techref/ (http://www.chevelles.com/techref/) , it's been discussed numerous times b4.
I'll admit that it's taking me some time to get a hard launch technique down, but man, it's anything but boring.
Stick with the M20, it's gearing is most similar to your 350. The M21/22 have a much higher 1st gear ( 2.20 v 2.52 ), and it might make the car a bit slow in first. Of course, if I were to buy a new non-original tranny I'd recommend the ST-10, now made by Richmond, or the Rich 5 speed.
The m20's should have the same output as the 350, most 21's do as well, but some 21's and ALL 22's have the T400 yoke.

Wally Jun 13th, 00, 6:34 PM Not all M-22s have the 32 spline output. Only those made from 71 and up, all the units had it then, some 70 transmissions had the large output as well.
I have an original 69 M-22, same as all the early units, 10 spline input and the normal output shaft.
I also have a M-20 from 1965 that is a 2.56 low gear unit.

Todd,
It really doesn't matter whether or not you want a 4sp in your car. Because there was a federal law passed that requires ALL performance type cars from the 50s-70s (such as Chevelles) be retro-fitted with a manual transmission such as a Muncie 4sp. This law goes into affect next year.

Todd69SS Jun 14th, 00, 12:35 AM if they pass a law, dosent that mean they would have to pay for the conversions to manual trannies? i just find that hard to believe since the final gear ratio in a 4spd muncie is almost the same as a t350, how will that make less pollution?
Later,
Todd

Doug Garland Jun 14th, 00, 5:39 AM I think Ga. has had it in legislation for 2 or 3 years, but hasn't passed into law yet. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif That's why I've been rounding up parts for my car. If you haven't started yet, you had better get on the ball. Those 4 speed parts are getting scarce.

Bob Tiley Jun 14th, 00, 6:30 AM If you get a 70 or earlier Muncie like I have in my 69 - you do not need to move the crossmember, you do not need to shorten the driveshaft and you do not need to change the yoke. In my opinion they are plenty strong for a 500hp street engine and makes for an easy swap (I have swapped several Chevelles and Camaros over to 4-speeds from those wimpy autos). I have the M-21 and would like an M-20 for street use.
Gene Chas Jun 14th, 00, 8:19 AM Dang, Tom, my tax dollars finally did some good and I'm finally compliant!!!!
Todd , ditto what Bob said. I swaped this year from M21 to 20 on DZ Auto's recommendation and it was very different. then I took my big gumbos off ( 28" high) and put regular tires on and the resultant increase in gearing is incredible. Plus, in some areas the M20's are still less expensive because the 21's are in greater demand. Who knows why.

injected66 Jun 14th, 00, 11:02 AM Whoa. Stop. Backup. Am I the only one that has never heard of this? Please either post more info on this "manual law" or a lead to further information. By manual, does this mean manually shifted auto? clutch type only? What. So my '48 Anglia can be a powerglide but the '66 has to to have manual trans. Please more info. This is to hard to believe. Why would a large percentage of us be putting in the overdrives? Tell me this is a joke. Later, Bill
mr 4 speed Jun 14th, 00, 12:02 PM ...in addition to the mandatory manual transmission Chevelle law, bright colored underwear must be worn on your head while driving and talking on a cellphone. The National Counsel of Highway Safety has concluded that underwear on your head has a positive high visibilty effect on other drivers, and creates a safety firewall so other drivers can be alert that you are on the phone. How do I know all this? Zedd from the "Numbers on my Big Block" post told me so.(just had to goof on everyone,I'm in a weird/happy mood) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

YenkoYS100 Jun 14th, 00, 12:44 PM Hmmmmmm......... Maybe this is why a guy tried to buy my Nodular B/W ST-10 yesterday?
I had it up for auction last year and am glad I didn't sell it. Towards the end of last year I found a '68 Camaro SS 396/375hp. car to put my 4 speed and 427 into.
This guy knew my reserve was $1500 (brand new 1978 tranny) and failed to meet it. Now he wants to buy it. I told him my intentions for it now. I can't see selling it to replace it with a $1300 Richmond aluminum cased one.
Me thinks it's time to start hording 4 speeds and parts (shifters, linkages, bellhousings etc.)
I already have a good start on steel flywheels and scattershields.

See what you have started Tom? I bet you'll be in the shop tonight freshening up some Muncies, so all these guys won't be breaking the law. Anyone need a rebuilt 4 speed, just email DZ or me, we can get you fixed right up!

drptop70ss Jun 14th, 00, 4:43 PM Ive been stockpiling trannies and converters for months in anticipation of the law. I even got a dummy clutch pedal hanging under the dash and a 4 speed hurst welded to my quicksilver, just in case any nice officers glance inside and suspect an automatic..also been trying to miss a shift when cruisin, but the tires chirp too fast and I cant seem to get that over revving part down either!

Gene Chas Jun 14th, 00, 7:34 PM The rider, or addendum to that law that DZ failed to mention, and which did not pass House muster, was that if you are blonde and have a pair of 44's YOU MUST wear a halter top. Clearly it was considered non -PC. Shame. It would certainly have qualified as a "beautification" measure.
Hahahahahahahaha! You hooked 'em DZ. Nice work Sir.
Philip Jun 14th, 00, 9:57 PM DZ you weren't supposed to tell them until I unloaded all my auto trannys and found a reasonably priced Muncie. We are in Bench Racing aren't we. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
And for all of you that missed it the first time it was posted Manual Trans Act of 1954 (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum6/HTML/000991.html)
Al do you mind if I drop this into Bench Racing Archive, I think it deserves to be archived.

injected66 Jun 15th, 00, 5:53 AM So there’s no link? *#&^%.
I hate you guy’s and I’m never coming over again. Man, do I have stupid on my face. Wife is right (this once), I gotta slow down, and then calm down. DZ, just hang me next to that big dumb moose head on the wall. Man, I hope a friend of mine doesn’t wander in here, doesn’t matter, I’m gonna go out, lay down on the creeper, and wheel myself under the car, see you all sometime next week.
Just one question, though. Can we use false names on here? I mean like, change our identity or something? Because that injected66 guy is not me.
