Harold,
Hi, I would really appreciate some advice on camshafts (specifically Ultrydyne) I have a Chevy II Nova with the follwing specs:
Weight: 2960
Engine: 427 BBC
Heads: 990 GM 2.25 int. 194 exh.
Int flows 349 cfm @ .700 Exh flows 225 cfm @ .700
Cam: BB286/300R-7 Ultradyne Serial # C8293
Convertor: 5000
Tranny: T-400 with Brake
Gears: 4:10
Tires: 33-18.5 ET Sreets
Fuel: BG-400
Intake: Single Plane
Carb: 800 CFM Holley
Exhaust: 4" dynomax (race/bullet) mufflers also 4"
Compression: 12.5-1

This camshaft in the same short block with less compression and 200lbs heavier went faster in my buddies nova. He said he installed the cam @107 despite the 101 degrees which the cam card calls for. He also said he put the intake lash @.022 and Exh @.024 depsite the recommended .030 Hot. The best ET todate is 11.15 @121mph @3100 feet. I can leave in second gear and go through the lights @7500 rpm, when I shift into drive I really suffer RPM's. This gear combonation was picked purposely for running NOS, which should work fine? What are your thoghts? Thanks

solarsg,

The BB286/300R7 is one of my favorite cams, and I always run it about 100° to 101° ATDC.
As I understand your post, you can make a one-gear pass up to 7500 OK, but if you try to shift it, the engine lays down. Or does the engine seem a little flat and slow at high-rpms anyway?
The BG400 is an excellent pump, are you using his regulator with the return line? If so, it generally returns more fuel than it should for my cam designs. If you're using the return-line one, you may need to put a restrictor jet in the return line.
What you can do at your next race is open just the intake lash up to .030" to .034", if you're running it tighter. If the car picks up 1 mph, there is a fuel problem, and you can describe your fuel system exactly.
As far as what valve lash to actually run, run the one that makes the car the fastest.....

UD Harold,
Thanks for the information however, I realize I wasn't as clear as I could have been. I leave in first gear with a T-400 and really have a slow 60ft time but have chalked that up to the 33 tall tire and 4:10 gear. I shift into second nearing the 1/8th mile and can leave in second through the lights if I choose and RPM through around 7500RPM. When I short shift into drive I can only reach 6400-6500RPM through the lights, a steeper gear would definetely help? What are your thoughts on putting the cam in @107 degrees vs. 101 degrees? What would you suggest for carb CFM size? Also, do you have any other cams that you would recomend for my combonation? Thanks
