: Need Help: Differences between 66s and 67s?

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot...but I'll give it a try. I just recently purchased a '66 Chevelle and I'm trying to learn the major differences between the '66 and '67. My car is a Malibu and not an SS car, it is a numbers matching car from the original owner and in excellent shape. I see some obvious differences but not sure what the major differences between the two years are. So, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I'll post some pic's hopefully next week.

Congrats on getting your Chevelle.

The sixth number in the VIN will be a 6 for 66's and a 7 for 67's.:)

What specifically are you looking for, there are not really any MAJOR differences between the two years.

The only differences are body ones such as the taillights and fenders and hood being different. The doors and trunklid are the same. The interior pieces will interchange but do have different styles between the two years. If you have anything specific in mind maybe I can give a better response.

That's what I was looking for. I wasn't sure if the two years interchanged any interior or exterior parts/pieces. Thanks for the help.

I saw a 66 at a car show a while back with a 67 front clip. Not everyone's idea of a classic, but it actually was a very cool and nice ride.

The dashes look close but don't interchange. Found that out the hard way. The best parts about 67s are the ones they share with 66s

Now that you mention it I think the piece above the glove box is the same fit but it has a different screw attachment fit for the two years. Not sure about the long strip, but I think the speedo piece and radio piece fit the same on both years but I could be wrong.

67's have Collapsible steering column and Dual bowl master cylinder and possible disc brakes. I'm not sure if 66 had hazard flashers either but 67's do. It was a year of safety upgrades mostly. The 400 turbo was first offered in 67 for a Chevelle.

I actually think the radio push buttons were diff.IE,one rounded on corners, one not.Details! Hazards werent standard on 66,I believe they were an option.

Dash strip is different---unless---you have a VERY late 66, as I do (w/67 strip)
Instruments are ever so slightly different--hi beam indicator in lower panel on a 66-----in speedometer on a 67.
no hazards on a 66
locking seat backs on a 67-----or very late 66
Steering wheels different.

My 66 is VERY late (mousey)----has 67 dash strip, seat, steering wheel
66 instruments, column, dash trim.

1967 was the first year for disc brake/ralley wheel option

Get the 66/67 Fact CD from Mystery Mike and you find the answers to
" everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask " 66/67 diff and Malibu / SS diff .worth the $$

And yes women prefer the 66 over the 67 ........those bucket seat latchs on a 67 are not user friendly to the ladies who enjoy the back seat :)

The upper dash strip, the 67's had a revised placement of one switch, so the strips do not interchange... Not sure on the "late" '66s having the '67 upper panel. I have a '66 wagon with a '66 dash, but it has the '67 upper dash panel (wood grain, but with '66 knobs)... I haven't taken it apart to see if there were mods. I don't recall if it was a late car...

I haven't checked, but someone told me the speedo lense are sifferent, with the spacing between 0-10-20 MPH being different between the years.

Since '67 had the collapsible steering column, which has a larger diameter, the lower dash cutout (arc shaped cutout) is larger on the '67. A complete '67 dash and column will swap over...
Radio and glove box trim are different, not sure if its mainly cosmetic...

'66 had optional hazard flashers, but it was an under-dash mounted switch. '67 Hazards were standard and incorporated right into the steering column.

'67 is one of those oddball designs, where GM tried unsuccessfully to improve upon the previous design... You'll notice when looking at the '68 Chevelles, that Chevrolet went back to the "wrap-around" grill and slender tailights (similar to the '66) in an effort to get away from the ugly '67 debacle... :p :D

Just kidding of course, but I do like '66 better...

I've noticed they make alot more items in the aftermarket for '66, and skip right over '67. At least it seems to be that way for elky's.

WOW...I'm glad I asked. A lot of great information I knew nothing about. I really appreciate everyones help and my "new" '66 will be here Monday afternoon. The guy I bought it from even sent all the paperwork from the last 40+ years...who keeps that stuff that long? I was really impressed. He is even sending old photos from the day he bought the car. I talked with him today and he said it was a sad day for him and his wife...but they must move on and buy some retirement toys....whatever that means?? Well folks, again I thank you for the info and I look forward to using this site often.

while similar in apperance, the '66 to me is much more meaner looking without the "side marker" tail lights and the much cooler front end treatment...to me.

Whenever I see one,it's Smokey Yunick all over again....

Sounds like a great car with a long history...pictures please.
