: Harold? Cam for a street 540?

Hi Harold,

I've picked your brain before on some more race type lobes, but now a buddy of mine is looking for a new cam for his 540" street Vette.

He currently has a Schneider Hyd roller that 232/244@.050 on 110 LSA with .585/.595 lift. He has 9.1 compression with GM/Edelbrock aluminum rectangular port heads. They have been pocket ported a little and he just had them flowed at 330in/204ex cfm @ .600. It is now using a Holley Strip Dominator intake and Holley HP1000 carb. The carb and intake alone picked it up 48 RWHP over the old GM dual plane and 850DP he was using.
The issue as you might guess is that it is pretty weak above 5000 rpm and noses over as far as HP goes. Runs well, just doesn't pull up top like a 540 should....at least not like I'm used to in mine!

He literally uses this thing as a daily driver in Dallas traffic ( I mean literally commutes in it!)so it has to be pretty maintenance free and it has to hold at least 10-11" of vacuum to operate headlights, brakes etc.

He has engine out of car and is having heads worked on and he expects to get them into the 350/250 cfm range. We'll know for sure next week. He is also going to mill them and juggle gaskets to get to 10.2-10.4 compression ratio.

The car has 3.08 gears and a Tremec O/D so it must be able to cruise at 2000 rpm in 5th on the highway.

So what do you think you have? He's been looking at the Lunati site and sees the following Hyd rollers:

240/245@.050 adv 299/304 .612/.612 on 112 LSA

242/252@.050 adv 301/311 .640/.629 on 114 LSA

245/250@.050 adv 304/309 .612/.612 on 112 LSA

Here's a couple of others he's looking at:

Crane- 244/256@.050 adv 306/318 .632/.632 on 114 LSA.

Lazer- 240/246@.050 adv 293/299 .634/.625 110 LSA

So the question is, do you have anything better in your arsenal or what do you suggest? I'm thinking he could handle the 245-250* range on a 112 and still maintain drivability. A little thumpy, but still decent. But he may need to err to the conservative side. We would like to see HP come in closer to the 5800-6000 range instead of the current 5200 rpm range

Thanks,

JIM

There is a poster here by the last name of McInnis, I believe, that has a beautiful metallic blue '69 Camaro with a 534 in it. He uses my BB308H10, 255/255 at .050, .650/.650 valve lift, and 110 LSA. I know he drives it on the street and to the track, and at 10.19, he's the fastest street car there.
I make a lot of these on 114 LSA for off-shore boats, and this wider LSA will improve the vacuum.
Perhaps he may give us a report on his ride.....

Thanks Harold. I think he's ordered the 245/250 one from you, but I'll make sure he see's this. I'm working on drawing him over to the "dark side" of more serious cams....and we're getting closer!

Hopefully the other fellow will chime in here too. Sounds like a strong piece.

Harold, his name is Jim McGinn.
The color is blue but it`s F**D Grabber Blue like the 70 Boss mustang with some extra purple in the mix, looks great.

540Hotrod, we use that cam shifting @ 5600 rpm 1-2 and 6000 rpm 2-3.
Using 3.73 gears and 28.5 x 10.5 Phoenix we are trapping 6300-6500 rpm.

It`s a thumpy cam in that 534' but it does well for a car that is not trailored.
He doesn`t even have one btw smile.gif .

At 3750 Lbs with driver we`re happy to be running as good as we are but there`s room for improvement.
First, we`re putting solids on it.
Second, the heavy 215/15 BFG radials and wide Billet Specialty rims on the front will be replaced with your typical skinny front runner set up.
Could even put the 4.10`s back in.

A couple other ideas are on paper, just waiting for cool weather and maybe we`ll get that 9 second time slip.

Anyway the cam is capable no noubt graemlins/thumbsup.gif
