: Had car weighed today. F/R distribution question
chevl71 Apr 23rd, 04, 1:48 PM I had my '71 weighed today. Full tank o' gas, driver, aluminum intake/head small block, alum. radiator, power glide, no inner fenders, PS, P disc, buckets, welds, battery in trunk. Still need to install front carpet, head rests, console and kick panels.
And the answer is.....3552# with driver. (3402 without driver).
53%F / 47%R distribution. How does this compare to a stock configured car for F/R distribution? I want to know if my efforts are showing. Future reductions are a mini starter and alum water pump.
With my Moroso springs and 90/10 shocks it should be fun.
LF - 970 RF - 909
LR - 834 RR - 840
1674# over the rear axle
1878# up front
How'm I doing?
BLK64SS Apr 23rd, 04, 3:33 PM why not lose the power steering and brakes also ?
68-72's must weigh a bunch more than 64-65's. Mine was down around 3200 w/o me in that shape( with a shortened elky frame ). It was down to 2760 w/o me. Its now closer to 2960 w/o me .. ( swapped a BB in into it )
chevelledude71 Apr 23rd, 04, 4:14 PM Do you still have the passenger side inner fender?
MadMarv Apr 23rd, 04, 4:34 PM My 4020lb full-everything 1970 Chevelle was 56/44.

Pat Kelley Apr 23rd, 04, 10:46 PM My 67 Elky weighs 3404 with me and full fuel. Bias is 52% front, 48% rear.
71chevy0192 Apr 24th, 04, 12:07 AM ok.... I want your car! :D Very very nice car you have there man. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
chevl71 Apr 26th, 04, 10:35 AM Hey thanks guys. I was thinking about the PS delete option, but wasn't sure how it will be on the street. I just don't know about the brakes unless I go aftermarket disc.
Wallace, yes I still have the steel inner fenders in the garage, e-me.
Matt, is your car a BB or SB?
71chevy0192, thanks for the kudos. Give me a shout if you're over my way. Where the heck is Marengo??
I'd hate to see how it weighed before I dug into it. I've scraped undercoating, removed sound deadener, blasted everything, tubular rear arms and trans x-member. I don't want to go fiberglass or lexan so I only have a few more possibilities.
Thanks guys!

I don't know how similiar the steering systems and setup on a 71 vs the 66 chevelles but my non power steering wasn't bad at all on the street. It was when I was a stop and trying to steering (out of parking spot etc) that is was a B!$$h
All I did was take the pump off and plug the holes. If I had used a manual box it may have had different results.

Pat Kelley Apr 26th, 04, 4:00 PM I have manual streeing in my 67. The biggest difference you'll notice it the number of turns lock to lock. Parking can be a pain since you have to keep cranking on the wheel. Effort isn't bad because of the gearing (more than PS), which is the reason for so much cranking on the wheel.
BLK64SS Apr 26th, 04, 4:07 PM I swapped to a manual box from a 69 Nova, just had to modify the tie rod end of the pitman arm a bit. I also went to disc brakes from a 71 Monte Carlo and used a front disc/rear drum non power master cyl. from a 70 1/2 Camaro( 68 Firebird had it also + others I assume ).
Steering isnt bad, and the brakes arent an issue at all. I've had this setup on the car since 1989 and drove it on the street often up till 1996, since then its been a track only car.
GRN69CHV Apr 26th, 04, 4:12 PM What are you after, weight reduction or F/R weight bias? '68 & later have a shorter wheelbase than the '66-67's, also the engine was set back a little bit. You could easily move a small block back 1 - 2 inches additional for weight bias. In my oppinion, the inner fenders don't weigh enough to leave out considering the structural bracing these supply to the front fenders. I may have missed this, but the heaviest parts on the front end are the bumper and the especially the hood. If you have a small block w/ alum heads, there's not alot left to get rid of. Don't forget to factor in weight loss by going to a light wt. wheel.
chevl71 Apr 26th, 04, 9:35 PM Good points. My goal was to be conservative yet still reduce weight first, distribution second. The inners are out only because I never installed them when I assembled the car. I think I'll try a few more things and just try it out at the track.
I don't want to make a strip only car, even though I have 15x3.5 Welds on the front (I had them left over from another project). Originally I started as a restoration but got side tracked into a street/strip car.
Thanks for the inputs guys.
