Hi guys, I plan to undertake a new project next spring. Its between one of two cars, so its between one of two motors and here they are. By the way, Im planning for a solid 12 second ride that I can drive as much as I want, and on pump fuel. First plan, I might freshen the drivetrain in my vega so here is the combo in mind.
About 9.8:1 compression 355 chevy with 180-195cc heads(either AFR, Canfield, or possibly the new brodix race rites depending on pricing, and there is also possibility for an iron pro topline head). The manifold will be an eddy performer rpm, a 650-700cfm holley carb, headers, and the camshaft I had in mind was one of harolds hydraulic voodoo cams that Ive just learned of. The one with 227/231 duration at at .050 and I think .484/.504 lift(I think thats the right valve lift) sounds like it will work well in this motor combo along with a 3.55 gear and about a 2500-2800 converter and 27 tall tires at most. In my sub 3000lb chassis, I figure it would be plenty driveable and get me into the 12's witout much troubles too. What do ya think.
Next, Im kinda leaning towards the 68 Elky for the buildup. If I go that route it will be about a 10.25:1 406 small chevy with the same intake, 750 carb, headers too, 3.90 or so gears, 28 tall tires, and about a 3200 rpm converter. The heads choices are all the same, except with a minimum of a 195cc port and a 210cc port at most. The cam I had in mind so far is a crane powermax solid camshaft with 238/248 degrees duration at .050 and .480/.500 lift, and there is a possiblity that I might tame it up a bit with a cam similar to the comp 282 solid cam and probably slightly less compression. I figre the big 406 will turn out to be plenty streetable enough for my tastes, and easily capable of 12's. What do you guys think? Mainly Im concerned with the cam choices. Im sure the drivetrain and top end combo are real ballpark for what I want to do, but with all the talk of the new and different lines of camshafts coming out of the woodwork, Id like to hear some opinions definitely dealing with the cam and static compression ratio choices. Thanks for reading this long one, and thanks for any input.
