: BFG Drag Radial launch info?

I have done a search and there seems to be a variety of info on pressure and burnout. Am I correct in assuming that 15-18 psi is the best pressure for these things and a 3 count for burnout?

I run 20 psi in mine..best 60 ft. was a 1.83
Short burnout too.

I really think your going to have to try different settings. Everyone I ever talked to about Drag radials have better results with different approaches. I 60ft the best with 18 psi with about a 2-3 2nd burnout in 2nd gear rolling out of the box. Others I talked to say they had to do long burnouts and get them really hot.

I have found decent success by treating the DR's like radial slicks I ran previously (18 lbs air pressure for 325/50's on 9.5" rim). I do a 2-3 shift burnout till I see some smoke, then power out to the start line.

I have found that I had to lower my start line launch rpm from 3000 rpm with slicks, down to 2000 rpm for the DR's...2500 rpm worked too, but the best 60' thus far was at 2000 rpm.

Have you tried to leave the line from Idle? Or will it just shock them too hard and smoke em?

I've tried leaving at idle.
And had no spin.

But my car is a 4 speed, and I think I lose time while the rpms come up.

I have yet to run a sub 2.2 60 ft time, yet my mph, is 106.

I HIT THE 12S LAST KNIGHT AT DRAGWAY 42! 2 TIMES AND IT WAS SPINNIN OF THE LINE!!!! graemlins/hurray.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Mike, Is there a large event there? I was hoping to get the Camaro out for some track time now that I have accomplished my 12 second chevelle goal. By the way the offer still stands for the drag radials if you are interested!
The best Performance from the drag radials for me was after a 3-4 count burn just in the DAMP area(I was two footing it so i didnt want to try longer) and power out. my best was a 1.908 at 22 psi. I dropped to 17 psi and tried it was slower, HOWEVER I found my Bottler neck so I may have to start all over. I did 60' at 1.915 for a 12.871 at 107.59 and I THINK it was spinning. It took off so hard I lost my concentration.(sure hope I find it!!).

Every vehicle will react differntly to using the DR's. My own car has a converter that flashes to approx 5200 rpm, so the tires are getting a decent shock...not as much as if it were a trans brake or nitrous launch, but...

Anyway, there are some seriously quick cars running the DR's. This past weekend was the Orlando World Street Finals. They have a drag radial class which had 77 cars competing for a 32 car field. The top qualifyer was a 8.29 @ 174 mph pass and the #32 bump spot was a 9.25 @ 139 mph pass. Incredible to say the least.

Malibu Mike said he was going to be there. I doubt I will make it as I have had my outing for the week. Sure would like to make it though. There are not many nice days left here this late in the year.

Milan, I am sorry I never saw your post about using your tires until you mentioned it today. Thank you for the offer. I wanted to get my 12 sec time slip before I start packing it away for the winter. I have a friend that wants help with his trash can and I thought maybe I could have helped ya. I know you were having traction issues as I was too. I figued two more eyes couldn't hurt, so I will be out there for the next two fridays. Norwalk is having test and tune for the next two weeks. If you need a hand let me know, its wierd being back at the track I have be at the roundy rounds all year.
Again THANK YOU!

Hey no prob. Did you run any races ?

MalibuMike70
Oct 17th, 03, 7:56 AM
I was hoping you weren't going to ask about any races. I got to make two time trails and one race that I quickly broke out. It was a terrible night, everything went wrong. I thought I would get better taction than I did, the best I did was a 13.4 sec/ 104 mph pass with a 1.21 R/T. My 60 times were 2.3-2.4 on each pass, traction was a problem(I'm going to blame the car instead of my driving skills). what da think? should I warn Warren Johnson Now? I will say that I did get a much better reaction time with my cat like reflexes with a .792 light. I don't want to tell ya anything else but I did ask the Norwalk officals if I could come back and they made me promise to do better.
In my defense I have't been to Norwalk in about 5 years. First time I had this car out. I think I have all my defenses in place now.
how is 42 compared to Norwalk?

Norwalk is a hands-down nicer fascility. I have found that I can get more runs in at 42. Dont be so hard on yourself about RT. My guess is that you are not leaving the line early enough. I leave after the 2nd amber goes out but before the3rd lights. I had .511-.560 lights this way. Before I had lousy RT. It just takes that long for my car to react. I'll give W.J. a heads up !!

Milan, how is your carb set up? What secondary spring,primary/secondary jetting, etc.

Milan
Oct 17th, 03, 10:40 AM
I plan on going through the carb again as time permits but for now.
780 vac. secondary

Jetting 76 primary 82 secondary

PV I think its 8.5 Tuned by driving with vac.
guage to man vac 2 inches
lower

Secondary spring Yellow

Squirter .035 with grn cam in #1
setting
I go through the lights (MEASURED LAST YEAR) at about 3-5 inches of vacuume. This was important for many reasons as I run a vac cannister hooked to manifold vac and I need to be sure that there is no vac advance going through the light.(poor mans spark retard)
Timing is 5* base supplemented by manifold Vac
advance of approx 10 degrees above 10 inches of Vac. total timing through the lights was 38 Total. (I need to try other settings now!!) sorry so long again but...I get caught up!
Milan
I think (as others have mentioned as well)that the accel pump on VS carbs assists the secondary opening rate. I feel that its extremely important to revisit ALL the carb setting after a significant improvement in track performance has been stumbled upon.
