I would like to swap out the cam in my 396 but i dont know which one i should choose. I want the motor to produce around 450+ hp. I will be running either a 700R4 or a M-21. The rear end will be equiped with 3.73. Here are the motors specs.

Bored 40 over 396
Crane Cam Part# 133901
?CR 8.0 to 9.5:1, but have been told that could be around 10:1
1.7 rockers arms
Cast# 3904390 Closed Oval port heads port and polish with harden guides
2.19 1.88 valves

I cant decide between these cams

XS274S
282S
XE284H
402A1LUN
402A2LUN
402A3LUN

I will be running power brakes but could always buy a Vacuum canister. if anyone is running any of these cams let me know whay you think of them.

IMHO and experince,a 3310 Holley (750 vacuum secondaries) would be best.

I ran the same basic heads and compression in my 396 with an Isky 292 cam 292 dur. 590 lift with 1.72 roller tip rockers a TorkerII manifold and 780 carb. 3000 stall turbo 400 with 4.11 rear. It was sn all around good performer street/strip ran consistant 12.30's. just my opinion I swear by Isky cams never had a problem (knock on wood)

You really need to know what your compression is, in order to pick the right cam. If you have too little compression and too much cam, you won't enjoy the finished product.

Just looking at the cams you have listed, the only 2 I've actually run in my own motors are the XE274 and the 282S. Those would be as big as I would suggest on a motor with stockish compression (9:1). You won't need a vacuum anything with either of those, they'll be fine in that area.

"There's no such thing as too much cam, only not enough motor."
