i am really growing to like the old school chevelle look. the aluminum slot, tow tabs, tunnel ram etc. on a street 454 with a 3500 stall and 4.10 gears what would be the better setup? weiand oval port street intake with dual 450 carbs or same intake with dual 600 carbs. if I can pick up a couple of cheap rebuildable 600's i would like to add the following if its worth it. progressive linkage, 50cc front pumps, the quick change vacuum kit that links the 2 together. generally do you guys jet up or down? how about squirters? also would run a MSD 6-AL to help keep the plugs clean. we have had good luck running stock carbs but if there is room for improvement i'd like to make them when rebuilding the carb. is it worth it to get some dyno time in for tuning? thanx mike
Dude, you're totally screwin' me up! graemlins/clonk.gif
After reading your tunnel ram post the other day I've started to think back to all the old stuff I used to see in high school in the 80s. You know, it really was just flat out wicked to see someone cruising around with the carbs stuck out of the hood.
Yeah, a tunnel ram, some meaty tires out back, plenty loud exhaust...that would be so cool! graemlins/hurray.gif
I don't know what's come over me. That is NOTHING like how we built the car!
...still...it's so cool!

I graduated in 1980. look at any of the mid 70's super chevy magazines. we picked up these cars relatively cheap and beat the living **** out of em. maybe there was a little difference in certain parts of the country. we all ran the bolt on ladder bars, funky paint schemes with gold leaf. of course we did things i would never do now that i'm too ashamed to admit. ya gotta love the big and littles, sun super tach, N-50 tires stickin out. mike

First of all from my experience with t-rams, the hole fat at idle thing (or clean plugs) just boils down to tuning. I have worked with many rams and the only one I had a fat idle problem with was mine. I've worked with 450's, 600 vacs, 650's, 750 dp's and never had the fat at idle issue. (after tuning) My 600dp's were a take off of the nascar 390dps and the metering block has a fat idle jet. I would get the smallest size intake runner manifold you can get to keep torque. I would run at least the 600's on a street performance big block and I would put on double pumpers. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) told me what a nightmare 2 600dp's were going to be on my pump gas small block. There not. I tried them VS the 450's and hands down the 600's for my set up ran way harder. As far as accelerator pumps go, most t-rams like large squirters. I had 4 28 squirter in mine. I had to go up to 35's to cure the lean spike. Running a 50cc accelerator pump I would think will only extend the length of time you have an over rich condition after initial launch. Going up in squirter size reduced my rich condition after launch from approx 1 sec to .5 sec. As far as jetting goes, most of the rams I have worked with we do go down in jet size from the factory size. Monte

All the talk of 80s stuff makes me feel like an old geek. I remember those days too, I feel like I'm still in 'em. graemlins/clonk.gif

Once I graduated Hig school in '79 I never left. It's still '79....isn't it? graemlins/beers.gif
Here's dumb thing we did as kids I hate to think we did. The ones of us that didn't have the money for a cam wuold go cruiseing through the mall parking lot. To make it sound like we had a big cam we would get out and pull one plug wire off each side of the motor and idle through the lot. Then pull over in a hidden spot and reconect them and leave. Dumb kids !!!!!

thanx monte,
we once ran a mild 454 in a 68 camaro with stock 600 vacuum carbs. car was a 4 speed and 3.73 gears. was even a low compression motor with a ls-6 solid cam. the car had a ton of torque. felt even stronger when we put the screws in the secondary to bring them in quicker. mike

I knew something sounded a little wrong.
