Steve,
There seems to be two camps on header size. I would like to see tests where the different sizes were both tried (and run in the 1/4 mile). My 533 and my friends 502 both picked up 10 hp going from a 2.0 to 2.25 inch header on the dyno. If your 489 is pretty wild, I would try a 2.0 inch header.

this will probably start another debate, but from my experiences if you have a bbc with a 4" stroke or more then go with at least 2" tubes, if it's a race motor then 2 1/8" or maybe 2 1/4". the only thing i would run a 1 3/4" header on is a 396/402, or a stock 427 or 454.

The 2 1/8" Hooker Super Comp header seems to work real well on an all out race motor. The 2 1/4" makes the motor a little lazy down low unless a lot of juice is used. I think a 2" would be better for a street/strip car.
