: Best DOT slick for the track?
Hoosier QT Pro
MT ET street
BFG drag radial
Nitto 555R drag radial
Anyone have any experience to share good or bad on the above?
Looking for a decent tire for my Chevelle.
Pat Kelley Jul 14th, 04, 8:50 PM Other have but I have not had good luck with BFG DR's. The DOT of choice in my area seems to be MT's. At last year's SCS, a 70 Chevelle with MT's DOT's pulled a wheel stand for some 300' at Pomona. Just dont' expect them to live long on the street.
Bob West Jul 14th, 04, 8:58 PM I've had my best 60ft ever on BFG's at 1.64...our track record in drag radial class is held by BFG's at 5.60 1/8th mile. My son is running e.t. streets on his truck and has had a best of 1.94 but trucks arent known for hooking too good.
BillsCamino Jul 14th, 04, 9:08 PM I've owned ET streets, BFG DR's and Nittos in the past few years on different cars.
The BEST 60' I've ever had from a DOT tire was a 1.67 60' from a set of 275/60-15 Nitto 555R's while on my SBC powered '80 Camaro.
I've got 28x12.50x15 ET Streets on my '70 Chevelle right now and can blow them away at will...even at 30 mph.
FYI, Nittos are the only tire of the bunch mentioned above that actually have a tread wear rating (100) printed on the tire. Also, because of the tread design, the only tire of the bunch that I'd prefer to have on my car IF I happened to get caught in the rain.
Bob West Jul 14th, 04, 9:18 PM Hey Bill....I run slicks in the rain  too lazy to change tires back and forth graemlins/clonk.gif
Bill,
Have you tried Nittos on the 70 Chevelle?
Robert,....you're killing me :D
onebadd66 Jul 14th, 04, 9:33 PM My best 60ft was 1.72 with D/R's @18lbs.
That has been the only tire I've run so far.I'm going to be testing out a new set of M/T radials and a set of Q/T pros in the next few weeks.I'll be posting the results from that outing. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

TROY Jul 14th, 04, 10:28 PM i like mt et streets
Pat Kelley Jul 14th, 04, 10:49 PM I had a 1.72 once with BFG DR's. However there was no consistancy. 1.90 then 2.20 the next pass. As I said, others have done well with them.

I would prefer running a radial on the street and was considering the new M/T's.

Mine slides when there's morning dew on the trailer ramps. :(
I'm curious to see how M/T's new drag radial shakes out. As far as I know they are still hard to find, but I did see a set at super chevy indy.

sheetmetal Jul 15th, 04, 7:22 AM i using the et streets on my 67. best 60' so far is a 1.56. i have to do a John Force style 8-10 second burn out or they dont hook. i had them off the other day and theres chunks of rubber missing out of them. there really soft. 22 passes and maybe 200 street miles.

Harold Sutton Jul 15th, 04, 4:09 PM My son's '71 long bed Chevy truck got low 1.6s with M/T E.T. Streets @ 4080 pounds. The 481 liked the N2O and went 10.57 @ 125.8 with Chevy heads, small roller cam, 3.73 gears, 350 Turbo and 150 shot of nitrous. Probably won't get to run at new track and is O.K. with me as truck doesn't have a roll bar and this makes me nervous anyhow.
Harold Sutton Jul 15th, 04, 4:46 PM Sorry, the time in the above post was run on E.T. Drag tires. My son said on the motor the truck fell off about 2 tenths with E.T. Streets. From 11.32 to about 11.50s.
sheetmetal Jul 15th, 04, 5:46 PM boy i relate to nervous. my ride hunts ditchs like a bat hunts bugs. its all over the place. scares the heck out of me. so, its seldom driven.
sheetmetal,
Whatsize ET street were you using on the 67' for the 1.56 60' time? Also, what size rim and how much pressure.
sheetmetal Jul 15th, 04, 8:02 PM 12.50x28x15 on a 8.5 centerline rim with 4.7/8 backspace. 17.5 lbs seems to work the best so far. ive trid 16.5 with slight lose in 60'. 15.5 lbs in the right airbag and 5 in the left. ce 3ways set at the medium setting in the rear.Dave
mr 4 speed Jul 15th, 04, 8:31 PM ..no extensive track testing yet on the DR's vs. the DOT Pro's other than one outing...seems the DOT's will outperform the DR's IMHO..we will see.
1BAD396 Jul 16th, 04, 8:23 AM Quick time pros graemlins/thumbsup.gif
my 68 chevelle @ 3760lbs has run best of 9.77 @140.05 on motor. runs 9.90 in the heat . I run the hoosier Quick time pro's 29x13.5x15 on a 10 inch rim. with bolt on sup parts. these tires have approx 90 runs and some street time on them . they had the best 60 ' for the first 25 pass and then felloff a bit. best 60 ' 1.410
383Malibu Jul 16th, 04, 8:42 AM If you peruse the pits at any of the headsup/fastest street car/small DOT tire series, you will see almost exclusive use of the M/T ET Streets. But, DON'T run them in conjuction with any kind of precipitation.
JIM Jul 16th, 04, 10:14 AM Hmm,,,,,From what I see the MT Street and the Hoosier QTP's are about 22 pounds each, while the radial tires are about 30 pounds each. I am looking at the 28-11.5-15 tires and the MT's are actually 8.6 wide tread and 11.1" section width (where do they get the 11.5" from??) The Hoosier QTP Pro 28-11.5-15 are 10" wide tread, 11.2 section width. How can two tires with the same size label be so different  I am leaning away from the radials from what I have heard/read about consistency at the track since street use is not an issue for me. I'm going to have to throw on the Hoosier DOT's I have now and take some measurements to see if I can even go with the new Hoosier QTP Pro. I don't think my rim backspacing can fit a 28" tall tire @11.2 section width. Last weekend at the track I was talking with a few guys there about their tire choice. Some of them swear by the Nittos, but say they may not be the good choice for a stick car because of the stiffer sidewall. I guess the same would go for the BFG DR's.
66 283 Jul 16th, 04, 11:31 AM I have had 2 different sizes of both ET Streets and QTP's to compare - the ET Streets worked much better with my car both times.
novaracer Jul 21st, 04, 12:42 AM I just ran my new MT ET STREET DRAG RADIALS sunday and went 1.37 60ft with a prev best of 1.40 on slicks...I also race alot on BFG drag radials and had abest of 1.48 on them. I would of put more power to them but was running pump gas and did not jet the nitrous any higher...I cant wait to test there limits...
SS540 Jul 21st, 04, 7:04 AM Novaracer,
Where did you get your M/T radials?
Doug F. Jul 21st, 04, 7:37 AM I've run both QTP's and ET streets. Seems the QTP hooked better initially, but then fell off harder, quicker. THe ET streets never hooked as consistently initially, but never seem to fall of bad as they wear.
THere are a ton of variables between cars.
I'm very interested in the MT ETS radials.
Look a lot more like a track only tire, maybe close to their radial slicks, vs a BFG.
From all the racing I have seen, if you can run ETS' or QTP's, you'd never consider BFG or Nitto drag radials, if you want to be consistent, and don't care about the street.
I second no rain with ET Streets!
Bob West Jul 21st, 04, 7:42 AM I've heard good things about the M/T drag radials, also heard they are way too soft and will not last at all.
mc71454 Jul 21st, 04, 8:47 AM I will only use the Hoosier QT Pro because I Know they work for me. I replace them at around 90 passes.

novaracer Jul 21st, 04, 11:43 PM ss540 I got them from McCormack racing, I found them in Nat. Dragster. Im not sure what sizes they have but give them a call....I will be getting some race fuel and trying the 250 jet at the next Edelbrock pro race....see what they will hold!!
Twilightoptics Jul 21st, 04, 11:50 PM From the people I've seen with the DOT M/T, people saying they don't last long, drive them daily, and or leave the tire pressure too low.
They are still a radial tire and need some 30+ PSI to keep the wear characteristics up.
So when you go to the track, lower the pressure to the recommended 20ish, then when you're finished PUT AIR BACK IN THEM.
The ideal thing is run full street tires around town, but when you want to go race, you just bolt the DOT slicks on at home and drive to the track. No needing to find a place to store your street tires while at the track.

Bill, spill the beans, how did you get those Nitto's to hook so well. I have an 81 Camaro with Cal-Tracs and no front sway-bar, but its a manual and the best with the Nittos DRs I can get is 2.03. What pressure did you run them out and what did you do for a burnout and in what gear/how long? Any other suspension modifications you did that you think will help me? Any info you can provide would be helpful!
caru68 Jul 22nd, 04, 10:51 PM Had Hoosiers QT's on a Camaro and they hook pretty hard. Don't use them on the street too much, because they pick up every grain of sand on the road and sandblast your quarter panels. They are very sticky.
