Bob West Dec 23rd, 04, 7:17 PM I went and picked it up today,he already had it started, run in for a while, relashed the valves,so when I got there he fired it back up,sounds good too, now if it werent 15* outside I might be installing it instead of typing this :D
k20mike Dec 23rd, 04, 7:40 PM That's a nice Christmas present. What are the specs on this new motor?
Mike
cmt454 Dec 23rd, 04, 7:41 PM  :D
Bob West Dec 23rd, 04, 7:56 PM 505 = 4.352 bore 4.25 stroke, ported 781's 2.25/1.88 valves, heads cc'ed @ 120cc,.020 shim gasket,10.53-1 comp.,Crane gold roller rockers, comp billet solid roller .654/.661 286/292 248/254 on a 107lsa installed at 106.5 (builder says cam is too small) but keep in mind I am still going to drive this on the street. Scat 9000 cast crank,Eagle I beam rods,Moroso oil pan recommended by Ed,windage tray, crank scraper, lifter valley tray,Melling M77 oil pump w/corvette spring(62psi at 2500),decked .012 ,deck height measured .009-.010 all around, JE pistons w/ceramic coated tops, speed pro file fit low tension rings,Clevite H series bearings, .0025 rod bearing clearance,.003 main clearance,Performer RPM intake had to epoxy the runners to gasket match he said they were off due to casting shift, he says the vic jr. would make 30-40 more hp and would buy the intake back if it isnt any quicker,Mallory unilite dist. I'm going to start with the HP950 carb and go from there, also going to use the 1.75" headers to start with also... All in all he thinks it will be a torque monster and all I have to do is get it to hook. He estimated 650hp.
Ron454 Dec 23rd, 04, 8:14 PM Ok, we all got wood.......
15 degrees? Sheesh.
Could make for great power....if the oil ever got warm enough to flow.
Winter sucks!
What's it going in again?
Ron
Room 16 aint got no view....but the hot plate's brand new.
BillsCamino Dec 23rd, 04, 8:14 PM Looks like an awesome project Robert! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Good luck with it.
I think your "and all I have to do is get it to hook" comment says it all. :D
Cam is very close to mine but it's ground on a 110 and installed at 105.
Bob West Dec 23rd, 04, 8:22 PM Ron, its going in the 72 in my link to replace the .030 over 454. thats been there for 5.5 yrs.
Ron454 Dec 23rd, 04, 8:34 PM Thank you!
I love Green Chevelles.
My former 70SS was I believe "sea mist" green. Or was it "sea foam"? Dark green vynl top and dark green interior. Bench seat even. I miss it.
Nice car, you will love the new massive mill.
Shoot, I'm a Nova guy now........but have had 3 Chevelles. And I want another. A 66 because that was my 1st car. Way back in 1973.....
Ron
Bob West Dec 23rd, 04, 9:16 PM I've had two 66 Chevelles, one was a SS396 4sp,the other a Malibu that I put a 396 in,I've had a 70 Camaro and my last hotrod before this was a 68 Camaro with a 427 automatic, I'm partial to the first gen Camaros, but they are hard to find and not cheap, I was looking desperately for a muscle car and this was the one I ended up with and I think its a keeper smile.gif
BigRed-L72 Dec 23rd, 04, 9:34 PM graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Purs Dec 23rd, 04, 11:06 PM alright! I'm guessing 650 is extremely realistic (conservative) if your heads flow very good.... Thats what I'm hoping for with a little less compression and a solid FT cam. Maybe it's just my wishful thinking... Congrats on getting it home and can't wait to see some ET's. graemlins/beers.gif
Bob West Dec 23rd, 04, 11:09 PM Thanks, still got alot of cold weather between now and then (E.T.'s), I just checked the weather page and it says 53* on sunday, I might get the swap done, but thats just the beginning.
yanniz Dec 24th, 04, 1:15 AM .0025 rod bearing clearance with a Scat cast crank? This would make me nervous, is this what your builder recommended?
Should definetely be a fun car to drive.
RussD Dec 24th, 04, 2:31 AM Hello 10's!! graemlins/beers.gif Least we're rootin' for it Robert! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
cody Dec 24th, 04, 3:17 AM Nice combo!! Hopefully you will try some comparisons, It will be interesting to see results of a bigger header, and/or a vic jr. swap smile.gif
mr 4 speed Dec 24th, 04, 6:38 AM Bob,all I have to say is: "cool man!!" graemlins/thumbsup.gif
..and Merry Christmas too!
505Nova Dec 24th, 04, 7:42 AM Congratulations - Sounds like fun Bob.
Don't you drive your car fairly often on the street? I'm not quite sure why you went with low tension rings on it? That's the only thing that looks a bit out of place on your setup.
Bob West Dec 24th, 04, 9:59 AM I put 1000-1200 miles a year on it,most of them are at the track. It was all his doing since its my first venture into a stroke/roller set up,I told him I wanted a 10.99 timeslip and that I run full time points and occasionally take it to the street. He has the rings listed as Speed Pro-low tension-(not sure if thats just the oil ring or all the rings) piston to wall clearance .007 ring gaps .020,.022, the crank has been knife edged or profiled. I actually wanted to build a 468, he told me for 300.00 (crank difference) and some change you could have a 505 since all the internals were going to be new anyway. He also said the combo would be more streetable and the goal easier attainable with the cubes, so here it is and we'll find out how it does. He builds alot of motors for guys at the track and used to chase the NHRA trail a few years back, and still runs a stickshift firebird at the track on occasion that runs high 7's low 8's at the 1000ft track BB chevy equipped of course. I myself was leary of the low tension rings but I've just put my faith in Greg and we'll see what happens,as I have seen his motors run, consistent and hard :D
Motor Martyr Dec 24th, 04, 10:18 AM Rob also mentioned that he wanted to drive the first 100ft with the car on the rear bumper!!! :D :D :D
yanniz Dec 24th, 04, 11:11 AM Rob, I am also putimg Speed Pro low tension rings in my engine this year...the oil rings only are low tension...I will also be runing a vacuum pump...some guys have been ok with low tension rings and no vaccum pump, some haven't...
Good luck and enjoy it.
sounds like you'll be needing some new rear tires soon. :D i'm glad you're trying the small headers and dual plane intake, it will be interesting to see what the differences between them are. i think your engine builder is probably right about the intake, and i think you'll pick up another 30hp or so with the 2" tube headers, if you do try those later on down the road. good luck and Merry X-mas! shoot, you've already gotten your X-mas present haven't you? graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bob West Dec 24th, 04, 6:52 PM Yes I do,I sang Merry Christmas to me all the way home with it in the back of my truck :D Hows the weather in Indiana? Merry Christmas to you too graemlins/thumbsup.gif
SS_Sean Dec 24th, 04, 10:56 PM Can't wait to see your timeslips, Robert. That's sounds like one heck of a torque monster!!!
Harold Sutton Dec 25th, 04, 1:13 AM Hi Rapid Robert, It's going to be single digits here in the morning in Tulsa, but it's supposed to warm up to about 60 a couple of days next week so maybe you'll get some warmer weather too. Lots of people here getting ready for the shootouts next spring. Good luck with the new engine.

I was thinking a 502.
Chris.
I used to run the SP low tension oil rings in my 427 stocker engine, Never had any problems.

Get that swap done!

Bob West Dec 25th, 04, 10:24 AM yes its a '74 454 block, bored .100 with a 4.250 stroke crank, and the block didnt have to be clearanced at all with the Eagle I beam rods.
Bob West Dec 25th, 04, 10:45 AM Harold, your sons car is a small tire car isnt it??? What is he using for rear suspension? 4 link or anti rollbar? I'm gonna try the SSM liftbars and METCO uppers for now, going to invest in some good front shocks too and go from there, might have to disconnect the sway bar again as it didnt make any difference with the other combo.
Harold Sutton Dec 25th, 04, 11:37 AM Hi Robert, Yes my son's Chevelle runs M/T 10.5W x 28" E.T. Drags on a Weld Alumistar II wheels. This combo bites like gangbusters having produced a 1.315 - 60' so far. He has a Miller anti roll bar, Moroso springs, and Hotchkiss control arms. The uppers are adjustable. The only down side to this is the 10" wheels are very expensive ($330 each). But you only have to buy them once.
mr 4 speed Dec 26th, 04, 5:45 AM Bob,these are 6.385 rods?
Bob West Dec 26th, 04, 9:36 AM yes,I forgot to mention that they are long rods,,,Eagle LW I beams and a stud girdle whether its needed or not, at least I'll have it should I decide to go even bigger :D
sobever066 Dec 26th, 04, 5:42 PM Are you gonna get some MT's or hooser's next? :D Congrats on a nice Christmas present. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bob West Dec 26th, 04, 6:38 PM Thanks..gonna go Hoosiers, had my most consistent 60ft times with them. I also got the motor dropped in today with a little help from my son and his friend. It should be running again by weeks end. At least get to see what its like on the street :D
mr 4 speed Dec 26th, 04, 8:00 PM Bob,I'm all smiling thinking about how much fun that 505 will be graemlins/thumbsup.gif
..so I'm guessing we'll be hearing about the test drive by next weekend smile.gif
