My son and I are redoing a 69 chevelle that came with a bench seat and column shift. the bench needs to be reapholstered with new foam too. the cost would be about the same if we bought a used set of buckets and redid them
My question is if we replace the bench with buckets, should we install a console shifter too. I had Camaros that had it both ways but can't remember seeing a Chevelle without a console with buckets.

I'm not sure on 69s, but early cars could be had with or without a console and floor shifter. I'm pretty sure 64s only got the console with the SS option, but any chevelle could be had with a 4 speed. I've even seen (or heard of, long time ago) a car with column shift pg and a console. Goofy. Build it the way you want it.

Chevelles came both ways too. You could order the optional buckets and not have a console.

I just did this last week, I had my bench seat redone after I got my el camino. and 6 months later I found a set of 66 chevelle buckets, I had them redone and finally after about 6 months I broke down and installed them. I went the no console route. In the el camino I perfer it because I can stick stuff between the seats and behind it, without worrying about damaging a console. the truck is a 68, Only thing I regret is jumping the gun on buying the 66 seats because they didnt come with headrests. Ive since picked up another set of later seats and my have them done and swap them out. jim

I scrapped a '69 that was factory buckets with a column shift powerglide and no console.

Without a console the automatic shifter was on the column, bench or bucket. You could get buckets, no console, and a standard floor shift, 3 or 4 speed in a '69 Chevelle Malibu 2 door hardtop or convertible. Our '72 Lemans Sport is a buckets, no console, 4 speed car. I set a GTO console in the car and my wife hated it. These consoles didn't have much character with nothing but a bit of chrome around the shifter. We like the car fine as the factory built it. You do get used to it. The console does give a more finished look though.

All these replies are interesting as I have a '69 w/ a bench seat and I want to pull it for buckets and was thinking of a console too. Does anyone know where or whom I could contact if I wanted to get the shift lever for the console and also a ring (or something) to replace the column shifter when it's changed into a console shift? I think it would look OK with no console in that many of you have said some options came that way, but I just wanted to see if I could re-do the car with console and shifter.
Thanks!:D
