I need a hydraulic flat tappet camshaft for a complete oringinal 454 engine from a 1973 Impala SW sitting in my garage for the past 20 years maybe longer. This is for a docile street motor to be run on pump gas. Has 781 heads and is a 2 bolt. I got some .060 Speed Pro's flat tops, compression I figure will be around 8 to 1. The 781's will keep the stock valve sizes. Going in a 71 chevelle with a TH-400 and stock converter and using 3.08 rear. Weiand Stealth intake I can use a rebuilt Holley 750 DP I went over. This motor will be using headers and full 2.5" exhaust. I was looking at the ISKY camshafts some are ground on a 108 lobe seperation. This will help build a little more cylinder pressure I figure. Thinking of a dual pattern also. Brand of cam does not matter as I feel all the top companies make good cams. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/beers.gif

I've run the Crane 272H in a low compression 454
216@ .050 .515 lift intake/exhaust 110 LSA
Motor was all stock, other than headers..about the same vintage..73-74 with 781's
I ran mine with an M20/3.31's pretty fun motor.
With an auto,I would get some kind of convertor with that cam.I run a B&M 2400 Holeshot.Works fine with the 2.73's

i have too ran the crane 272 cam...........it gave plenty low end to light up tires and was good enough to pull 100 mph 1/4's even with a stock convertor........and 2.56 gears along with 7.7 to 1 compression...........it might be an older grind but it seems to work well..........

I can't see putting 781s on flat top pistons, too little compression unless they have been milled down. 116-122cc is too much volume for flat tops. Just go with a stock cam to get the most compression you can with that combo.

My favorite is the Lunati 302A4LUN, 272/272 at .0045(266/266 at .006), 217/217 at .050(In SBCs, my 272 and the Crane/CD 272 do not look alike...), .515/.515 valve lift and 112 LSA. Idles about 550, 21" of vacuum, nice gain in fuel mileage.
Here is a dyno test Mercury Marine did in 1982 or 1983. The engine was a stock 454 BBC Pick-Up engine, 8.9:1 CR, Quadrajet, cast iron intake and exhaust. The cam was actually the 276/276H12, but imagine the power about 200-250 RPM lower.
3000 455 260
3500 464 309
4000 466 356
4500 432 370
4800 406 371
5200 384 380
5600 342 365
This was with a STOCK fuel-line, of course.
The 272H12 in stock 454 Duallies gives 8.5-9.5 MPG pulling a 28-ft race car trailer, and 12-13 with the trailer unhitched.
For those who think 380 BHP is not very much, 1st, remember, different dynos read differently, and 2nd, this cam will float the front of a MHP patrol car on the top-end.....

I figure right-on!!

Stock old P/U 454 motor at 7.9 to 8 to 1 CR...

Mine when I got it to make my 496 had the pistons down in the hole .025" and they were true flat-tops with only one valve notch, a .038" or so headgasket and good -781's!!
