: Wiped a lobe, should I go with a different cam?

Well I guess the subject explains it. I wiped a lobe on a Comp Cam 280H in my 350. I might like to go with a roller cam. What cam would work well and give plenty of power with my setup?

350 sbc
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
186 heads 1.94, 1.50 valves 64CC
10.1 compression trw pistons
1 5/8 headers
th-350 tranny
3.73 12 bolt rear

I posted and realized there was something else.
Do I have to change the springs for a different cam? Could I go bigger, if so how much?

Im not going to recommend a cam. I will recommend this though. DO NOT USE THAT CRAP COMP SENDS FOR LUBE, i was going to use some to break in my Howard cam this spring and to my astonishment i put the cam in got her all buttoned up, looked at the cam through the lifter valley a day later and the lube was ALL GONE. I dont care what anyone says about some "film" on the lobe that was still there, 98% of it drained in the oil pan. I personally recommend buying a 1 lb. tub of Grey Crane Moly lube. You cant get this stuff off, its like smearing on vaseline. Call Jegs and ask about it, its not in the catalog but they have it. Good luck man.

Do not go bigger-Perfornance will suffer for sure.

I'm kinda under the impression that if you only have 10:1 and Feuler heads with no port work and 1.94/1.50 valves it might really perform better with a slightly milder cam. That was a mouthfull tongue.gif

Staying with flat HYD's
Comp 270 Magnum
270 224 470 110

Isky 270 Megga
270 221 465 108

Did you compute the compression or is that a guess?

What converter do you have?

I was told when I bought the car the heads have been ported and polished. But I only know the specs of the heads from what I found looking up the casting #'s.

Second time I realized there was more to say.
Anyway, the previous owner said he did an compression check and it came out to 10.1.
The stall converter is a 2800.

Again with flat HYD'S

If you have 202/160's and porting you could go with the 280 Magnum like you have.

If you are have 194/150's it will be slightly restricted on the top end because of flow.

Myself,I would still get a milder cam since I like to optomize the compression for cams.
It makes for an incredable bottom end and midrange.
I really can't say if it would perform better on the track or not.The street manors would be greatly improoved with better low end torque in the driveable ranges.

I had a 10.2:1 355, S/R Torquers202/160 bowl ported,Performer RPM,650DP,Isky 280 Mega,TH350 2400 stall,3.42 gear,26 tall tires and I swapped to the
Crane Energizer 278H10
278 221 467 110

You probably have about the same effective gear ratio because you are probably running a 28inch tire.

It was way better on the street.A real responcive throw it sideways  tire frier.

I did think it could use more stall speed for a real good launch. You are already have that.

I will say that I did like the Isky 280 megga over the Comp 280Magnum.The Isky had more bottom end torque and sounded meaner with the 108 LSA.
A little less vacuum though.
I had power steering and power breaks,no problem.

Any bigger...
there would have bean problems with the breaks.

"porfted and polished" is a phrase used to describe many things, some of which don't look anything like porting and polishing.

Since you wiped out a cam I ASSUME you are going to pull the engine out and clean it up inside?

No?, then by God dont waste the money on a perfectly good roller cam which will be eatn up by all the crap flying around the oil galleys in that motor.

or yes, then find out exactly what your compression is. Doing a compression check and "it came to 10:1" is a totally spurious statement. My guess, he had no clue.

If you still have it together you might wnat to try a compression test on a few good cylinders. If its 10:1 with that cam, it should be around 175 psi.

That 280 cam is too big for your combination, it would drive better, be more throttle responsive and more fun to drive with a cam that were one or two steps down.

And listen to Gene, that engine is full of part eatin' debris.

I have every intention of pulling the motor apart. Just wanted some thoughts on cam selection.
The motor would be apart but the weather in NY took a tempuature dive.
