anyone know of a book or a manual on how to rebuild and set up gm rearends ? cant seem to find one and am getting tired of paying to have gears changed when i know with the right info i could do this myself.. thanks :confused: name of book and author if you can

I forgot you can also pickup a GM chassis repair manual from the late sixtys and it will have some great info.

Get the factory manual from some of the old parts suppliers. There are two manuals one is the "Shop Manual" and the other is a smaller MUCH more detailed manual that takes ya into the guts of rear ends transmissions and other sub assemblies. Having a brain lock here ...I think it is called a "Unit Overlaul" manual or something like that. The shop manual is much higher level and is generally the one people think of. The one I mention is for the real hard core fix it guys. For example the shop manual tells about replacing rear end ctrl arms or possibly axel bearings where as the other manual gets right into the nitty gritty of the rear axel and ring and pinion.

The book oman mentions is referenced in my "Chassis Manual" and is called an " Overhaul Manual" which gives all the details of fixing rear end, steering box, etc.. Wonder if they're avaialble. Gee, wonder if its on that Detroit Iron CD manual?
