HEY: Ok were had a pretty good wind storm With rain yesterday. This was just waiting to happen. I had a 40 ft flag pole out in the yard. And out here theres nothing to block the wind. Feilds all around us. I'm surprised it last this long. But my question is. How do you dispose of a flag the correct way ? I have a couple that are ripped from the wind in the last couple of yrs. Now this one hit the ground. Can I take them to a V.F.W. hall or some place like that. An they can do it the right way? Anyone know. Thanks And HAPPY 4TH OF JULY:yes:

I do believe they are supposed to be burned. It is a completely diffrent thing to burn a flag out of respect for the flag and to burn a flag in defiance of that flag.

*SUGGESTED PROCEDURE FOR INDIVIDUALS TO USE IN PRIVATE OR PUBLIC FOR DISPOSING OF A TORN, SOILED, OR BADLY FADED U.S. FLAG.

1. The Flag should be folded in its customary manner. (See current Program Chairman's booklet or VFW ritual.)

2. It is important that the fire be sizeable and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the Flag.

3. Place the Flag on the fire.

4. The individual (s) can come to attention, salute the Flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.

5. After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.

6. Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

I've been to a couple of old or tattered flag disposal ceremonies at the local Elks club. They do it right and with the proper respect that the flag deserves. Everyone have a safe and happy Fourth of July. God Bless America and our sons and daughters in the armed forces.

I agree no officially endorsed ceremony.

Burned with dignity and reverence.

I am a Scout leader (and retired AF veteran) and we always are happy to take flags to have the boys learn how to pay final respects to as flag. See if you can find a local council that can suggest a nearby Troop.

Around here alot of people take them to the local VFW, or other simular organizations.

Same here. They have a Flag Retirement Ceremony twice a year.

Our cub scout troop assists the VFW in retiring flags periodiclly. The VFW will probablly be your best bet.

This is my vote. The younger generation needs to learn the proper way, and the scouts would probably LOVE to have something like this since they don't get to do it often. I was a scout until about 1990, never got to do a ceremony like this, and I was in a big troop.

Look up your local scouts. This is a great educational opportunity for the young men and women. There are lots of different ceremonies but all involve burning the flag. We just disposed of about 20 a couple months ago (most from my 30' pole which seems to shred them quicker than I can replace them!).

on that one link did u see it where it said this?

http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/images/red.gif (http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html#q11) Is it okay to have a flag T-shirt with words written on it?
http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/images/faq17.jpg
No, the flag should never be worn and no, the flag should never have marks or words written upon it. Section 8d of the Flag Code: "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel." Section 8g: "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature."

dang guess being patriotic is wrong in that way? who knew guess old navy shirts shouldnt be bought they all have a flag.

That phrase is meant to mean an actual flag, not a depiction of one. You can't wear an actual flag, nor can you make any markings on one. You can use it's image on other things.

Since we're on it, who knows why the military wears a flag patch backwards?

On the right sleeve. The stars will be to the right instead of the left. The star side would be fastened to the standard and flowing out. So as you advance forwards the flag has to flow to the rear. On the left sleeve the stars are to the left for the same reason.:) I had a mirror image made for my semi tractor for that reason. The guy at the vinyl shop wouldn't make it at first until I explained this to him by taking him outside to look at his flag from both sides as it flowed in the wind!
