I keep throwing belts when racing. I have tried a variety of different belts and even the original stuff that cost me 25 dollars. Nothing seems to work. Could I have a worn pulley or do I need some of those deep groove ones?

I had that problem with my 454 in my 66. I put some march under-driven deep groove pulley's and hadn't had a problem since. Mine might be a little overkill, but they look good.

Check alignment with a small pen lazer pointer.
Just lay it in the pulley's grove and see where it lands on the other pulley.Shim accordingly.
I find this method easier than a straight edge and very accurate to boot.
Do not rely on your eyes.
If that doesn't find any problems try a better belt.Read this before you go
I had a "WICKEDBAD" problem with throwing belts.
I cleaned the grooves and aligned the pulleys.
Nothing I did solved the problem.I didn't want to use deep groove pulleys because of the cost.
I tried so many belts that it wasn't funny.
A friend told me about the Dayco Top Cog belts and I thought
I finally got sick of it and tried one.
 PROBLEM GONE!!! graemlins/beers.gif
That's how I fixed it.
Goodyear Gatorbacks also work well I hear.
They use both the Top Cog and the Gatorbacks in NASCAR.
Also a friend of mine just went through the same thing...Guess what fixed it???
Yep.. Top Cog.
If you do a search you can find a few posts about how people use a bolt to stop the cheap belts from flexing so much.I guess that works too.

Also check for bracket flex. This will throw any belt.People who use the short water pump and the long early style alternator bracket have problems with throwing belts.Switching to later 1969 and newer long water pump brackets help eliminate the flex and cure a lot of problems.

Oh yea...
If you have chrome pulleys.
Nothing will help.

I also had probs with belts till I started using Dayco Top Cog, and I have chrome pulleys. Seemed like right between 5500-6200 RPM they would come off or just brake.

Thanks for the input guys. The Dayco belt seems to be working fine.
