: 68 Chevelle SS vin missing
pdvanocudadave Jul 3rd, 07, 10:20 PM While taking a long walk around the parts yard today,I found 2 68 Chevelle SS in the yard.1 of the cars still has the 138 vin and cowl tag and the other has the vin and cowl tag missing. The 138 numbers are still under the heater box of that car.The titles are there to both cars. Can I sell the car missing the vin and cowl tag? What will hapen if the vin and cowl are being used on another car? A 1970 Roadrunner in the same yard was missing the vin, fender tag, part of the wiper cowl and the top of the radiator support.
mmurphy77 Jul 3rd, 07, 10:31 PM I would almost guarantee the Roadrunner parts are being used on someone's Satellite since those are all the places the vin is. As far as the missing Chevelle vin and cowl tag, I'm sure the same thing has been done. I guess you could run the vin (con vin from heater box area) and see whose car turns up. If you sell it that way I think you're leaving yourself open for some liability.
pdvanocudadave Jul 3rd, 07, 10:51 PM Could I run this vin number through Team Chevelle to find out if some one could be using this vin and who would I check with? What if some one paid high dollar for an SS car and got a clone and I am holding the real title? What if its one of the members here?

That could get interesting if someone owns a car with that vin. I for one think you should post the vin just to throw up an alert if this car is on the market for sale. Do you own the yard that the cars are in? Did someone steal the vin and cowl tag? What state are you in?
This question goes out to the rest of the experts. Being that pdvanocudadave has the last valid title, Could someone get a replacement title for a car without having some sort of owner history or bill of sale?

This is very likely, as even the companies who offer title service don't actually search the title history of the cars they fix. It is in the small print, that this is the responsibility of the new owner.
1966_L78 Jul 6th, 07, 3:42 PM If the car is there, and IF it still has the vin stamped on the firewall AND the title, you should be able to title it as such, and whomever "owns" the other car will be in for a surprise...
If you are serious and have the time, go to the Highway Patrol or other agency involved in assuring the car is correct... Tell them, and they can check those numbers to see if there is someoneelse with the "same" car...
The only "negative" you would face (IMO), would be that once the GM VIN plate is removed, the State will issue there own tag (looks nothing like the original tag), but still will likely have the correct 138 numbers... I have seen numerous cars like this over the years; correct VIN numbers, but stamped onto a "State of California" tag that was then rivetted to the car...
A good friend of mine was looking at a Chevelle with a missing VIN tag... He drove it to the Highway Patrol, where they pulled it in their shop and looked for the hidden numbers and checked the system... Everything was clear, and they used the same VIN number and made a new plate... No charge, and less than an hour of work...
While the car would still have the correct 138 VIN (noting a True SS), the value would be less than a 138 car with the original tags, and possibly worth even less than a 136 vin'd car with original tags (unless sold to someone that doesn't see the tags themselves, like Ebay, etc...)...
pdvanocudadave Jul 6th, 07, 7:28 PM I went back to the yard today to buy the first of the 2 138 Chevelles.I was going to buy the one with the vin and cowl tag,and the cowl tag was gone. After finding out the owner of the yard was selling cowl tags and vins,I walked out of the yard and told him to kiss my a??.I will not deal with sick people like that and I may call the state police
deaddog Jul 6th, 07, 7:43 PM OK , I'll bite ,.....You probably don't want to say Who it was , but I think you could say , maybe what State and City where this outfit is ? I have no doubt that there are most likely 2 of quite a few cars out there, restored sitting in garages, never registered lately, and the new owner has NO IDEA ??? just a thought ?
Big Block Muscle Jul 6th, 07, 10:11 PM Dave, you probably can find those tags on Ebay or past Ebay auctions.
I have a friend at DMV that helps me when I,m buying a classic or Muscle car.....
pdvanocudadave Jul 7th, 07, 2:28 PM I cant say what state it is in.There are about 6 yards in that area and all of them would proubly get black balled over this one yard. The other yards seem to be honest yards, working to make a living. In time I am going to release the name of one yard on team Chevelle and let it be known where the 68 Chevelle convert 136 vin is at.It has alot of rust but some one on team Chevelle wants that car.As for the yard thats selling vins and cowl tags,I will not go back there and I did not write the vins down.I came very close to owning both those cars and after seeing the cowl tag missing and being told it will cost one thousand to get it with the car,I walked out.He said he would have one made by the state,ya right. He had kids following us around the yard as we read the numbers on these cars. These kids were hiding every where in the yard and as we found the best cars, these kids were marking them for vin removal.A 65 GTO convert is the next vin on there list,im sure. This guy does not know what cars are very colectable. Its all to bad because this guy could have made an easy million dollars or more with his cars on team Chevelle.Team Chevelle would have had to load its members on buses to get us all out there. This guy had so many Chevy II cars, I could not count them all.The 65 thru 68 Chevelles he has well over 100 cars.I could not count all the Impallas also. This man has over 7000 cars from 1960 to 1974 and as far as im concerned they can all go for scrap now.I think he is well known for vin switching and selling vins, having this many colector cars in his yard with so many people looking. Its all just to bad
elcamino Jul 7th, 07, 6:21 PM This kind of crap has been going for many years. Years ago I hit a lot of yards looking for 70 El Camino parts and found a lot of car missing VIN plates and trim tags. I always assumed someone stole them off the cars (or the yard sold them). Seems that happens a lot where a person will buy a old car and no title can be found. I know someone right now with two 1st gen Camaro's and no titles.
There are a lot of people in this hobby who see nothing wrong with this and say they are just saving a Chevelle from the graveyard. Any deception is perfectly ok.
