: 66 NOVA max tire with mini-tubs
66SBCDUECE Nov 26th, 03, 9:54 PM Well with 60 foot times at 1.77 to 2.02 and 12.4 @ 111 mph, the 26/8.5 M.T.drags don"t appear to be letting me approach my 11.99 e.t. goal with my 13.5 starting line ratio 5peed 327 street car. My question is what would be max size tire for moving spring in then how much bigger can you go with addition of moving wheel tub in to butting up to stock existing frame rails? Want to leave stock outer lip alone at quarter panel and hoping to get at least 28" diameter. Any one with with suggestions or experiences on the older nova's that would be greatly appreciated as always. Also thinking of changing from slapper bar to caltracs and split mono's!!!!! thanks much AL
66chevyIISS Nov 27th, 03, 1:25 AM I don't think bigger tire is your problem you need to look at the suspension. I am running same times as you (12.47@110) with a 235/60R15 drag radial open rear. I have drag shocks front and rear with fronts set at 90/10 and rear 50/50 also have drag springs in the front. I your 60's are way to inconsistent for running slicks. What are you doing different in your launch? Cal tracs would be a huge addition and I would try that alone before you go cutting into the car a lot. What more info can you provide as far as suspension etc...

66SBCDUECE Nov 27th, 03, 9:15 AM Those are great pictures of mini tub process on steve's web. Car has v8 springs up front but would like to try 6 cyl spring. Also has 90/10 lakewood. In back have 3 leaf replacements with rancho 9000 adj. shocks. Old shocks were 50/50 lakewoods but body seperation was so aggressive at launch ,tires actually unloaded off pavement. Assuming this was combination of low 1st gear, aggresive ram clutch, slapper bar leverage and shocks bottoming at full extension with excessive body seperation . Rancho shocks helped slow this body seperation a lot but seems anything over 4000 rpm launch car spins through 1st gear! Looking at going to softer hitting clutch and possibly adjustable long style instead of diaphragm pressure plate. I am thinking i need to get 60 footer to 1.66 approx. to achieve my 11.99 e.t. goal with this low torque 327 combo!!!!! thanks again AL

You might try Moroso front springs. We run these in a couple of early Novas and they work very well. The ability to get the front end up will help with controlling the rear. This is a pic of J0hn Hladky's G/S 66 launching. You can see how much the car separates in the rear even with the wheels off the ground.
JUNK YARD DOG Nov 27th, 03, 1:23 PM moved my springs in 3 inches 0n each side with compition eng fram conecters 51/2 back space wheels .i run 28 x 9s im going to cit the set belt nut out and move it to run a 29 x10 next year
66SBCDUECE Nov 27th, 03, 1:43 PM Junkyard are you moving inner half of wheel well in when you talk about taking out seat belt bracket? Did you use shackles in back and if so how did you mount them or did you go to old comp engineering slider box. Not really sure if C.E. recommends these sliders for street use!! thanks again and enjoy turkey! AL
JUNK YARD DOG Nov 27th, 03, 2:13 PM it looks like i will have to move the front off the wheel well in i believe that is the only restricktion i will have to run the ten inch tires. i used the comp eng rear spring hangers in the back they bolt to old spring hanger and to the trunk pan .i had to make 4 small sims or spacers to level out the hangers where they bolted to the trunk pan .it doest take much time to do it once you get the spring perches moved in. when i put the 12 bolt in i used ford perches and the u bolts to hold the rear end. my 60 fts are nothing to brag about but they are in the lower 1.50s i also used poly busings in the springs
JUNK YARD DOG Nov 27th, 03, 2:47 PM to use the 28 in tire i also had to work on my rocker pannels a little for clearane as did the other guys on the camero site
66SBCDUECE Nov 27th, 03, 5:14 PM How much did these offset hangers raise the back of the car junkyard? What kind of motor and tranny do you run to get those 60 foot times? ALSO what starting line gear ratio do you have? thanks much, AL
onovakind67 Nov 27th, 03, 5:17 PM I used AFCO sliders on my 67 Nova, along with the Mopar springs, you just need to have the right spring eye. They were just fine on the road, I probably put 30,000 miles on them. They're a lot easier to do than make a shackle that fits, and they allow you to raise the rear spring eye as high as it will go. Speedway makes a version of the slider, also. SS396 Convert Nov 27th, 03, 6:06 PM I have a 66 Nova that runs 11.30's all day (11.22 best) on 235-60 BFG Drag Radials...350 C.I.,( only non GM parts in the engine are Crane Roller Rockers) Spraying 150H.P., 700r4, 3.90 posi, Cal Tracs, Rancho adjustable rear shocks, Koni front shocks....my best 60' time was 1.67......having the automatic makes the launch softer.....I've played with this for 2 years getting a consistant 60'........the manual trans is probably more fun to drive but I'll take the automatic for the track anyday......easier to tune the suspension
