: dash clock vs. console clock for 66 SS?

I've got a car with factory 4-speed console with clock (as stated on it's ATL trim tag code). The car has the standard dash - no gauge package - but also has the small dash clock on the right-hand side of the speedo. Does anyone know what the factory did with that right-hand side of the standard dash if the car is ordered with a console/clock option? It's seems like there should be a delete cover for that part on the dash where the standard clock would be, but I could be wrong. Are there consoles that were clock delete too? I think one of these clocks was added on and, as I am trying to restore the car back to original, I'm trying to find out what would be correct. Any help or info is much appreciated.

The console is the primary place for the clock, just right of the speedo is second, dash top is third. (floor mounted one was for late 67 only)

In my opinion it should have a blank off plate next to the speedo.

I agree with Tom. Clock delete plate was put in if the car was not ordered with gauges and was ordered with console. If you got a Bech seat 4 speed car, the console clock could not take place obviously.. so the clock would go in dah if gauges were not ordered or on top of dash if gauge pkg was orrdered.

The primary, or standard, place for the clock is in the right pod on the dash and was standard for Malibu and SS396 and optional on 300 & 300 Deluxe.

Secondary location is the console if console ordered - again Malibu or SS396 only. If console ordered but no gauge package, a blank plate (with a white painted +) was used in the standard clock location and a plug supplied for the hole left by the clock stem. The console included the clock and automatically moved it there.

Third is on top the dash if gauges ordered but no console.

FWIW, the console required bucket seats to be ordered but bucket seats did not require a console to be ordered.

My point was you could order a bucket seat car and not be required to order a console thereby keeping the clock either in the dash with no gauges ordered or atop the dash with gauges ordered in 66.

I'm sure many think bucket seats and a console go hand-in-hand and one automatically got the other. Not so. Ordering A51 bucket seats DOES NOT require the D55 console to be ordered but wanting a D55 console required A51 bucket seats.:noway:

RPO figures for 1966 show 95,482 orders of A51 bucket seats but only 82,477 orders of the D55 console. Apparently about 13,000 66 Chevelles were ordered with buckets but no consoles.

The figures for 67 are not quite as spread (about 8,000) but it's still 79,475 for A51 but only 71,482 for D55.

I think it likely that someone either switched dashes, or maybe switched the Trim tag and added a console and buckets (obviously adds value when selling)...

Maybe the car had guages originally, and someone pulled them out at one time... Perhaps the seller just threw in a standard dash to sell, etc...

I own one of those 13,000 66 Chevelles. Bucket Seats but no console. It has a console now but its out of a wrecked 66 I bought back in the 70's.If I knew then what I know now.
