I need some real world opinions on this. Im changing cams, going smaller in duration and lift. Im staying with a solid flat tappet cam. The springs I have on there now are a little bigger than what's recommended, although I know there is some room to play. I dont want to change springs for obvious reasons, they are only I summer old (and very few miles), and then there's the money factor, and the work. They are currently 135# seat pressure and 350# open pressure. The recommended springs are 122# seat and 305# open....Will these pressures be OK with break in?? That's what Im worried about, not after break-in, Im sure they will be fine...Im getting different answers even from the tech guys, but Im worried that some of them are just reading from a manual. They are singe springs, so I cant take the inner spring out. What would you guys think?? I have a few out, and Im going to take them today and have them tested to see if they are actually what they are rated...maybe with one summer's use, they are less pressure alerady. John

John,
My opinion is that your spring pressures are not far enough over the recommended spec to worry about it. First, make sure that your installed height is correct and have the springs you have already removed checked on a good valve spring checker. If you still have concerns about the pressure, you may be able to use special valve locks that raise the retainer about .050". These should be available through any engine builder. If you do resort to the special valve locks, be sure to check retainer to rocker arm clearance.

Run it in on outers only. It must be a small cam John, with only 300 on the nose you shouldn't rev this thing very high. Too light for a nice 6500 rpm motor IMHO.

Engineguy, thanks...Im going to use them, I talked with two engine builders today, and one of them checked some of my current springs...they are just about at specs...and both guys told me that it's not enough to worry about...these would work fine. ;)
Gene, it is smaller, 230 @ .050 and .540 lift...I doubt it will ever see 6500 where I drive it  , but ya never know!! The little extra pressure of my springs will give me a few more revs at the high end, so that's a plus. And they are single springs, so I cant run just the outers. I guess I'll let you know how it goes after Monday. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Are they the Manton pn 2454, BB springs from Competition Products?
I ask b/c I just used .050" taller retainers to take some of the pressure off my CC 282S solid cam.
