My night just went to hell. My stupid rod tipped over and put a small nick in a rod journal. It wasnt a main, but I think either way this spells disaster. Im pissed, will it be ok, its tiny, but you CAN feel it with a finger. If not, can they resize just one journal? graemlins/angry.gif graemlins/angry.gif

It's all overrrr!

Im certainly no expert, but I bellieve that they can micro polish small nicks out. Good luck!

I had no idea connecting rods could be stupid or smart. ;)

Good luck.

Chill out, dude. Bring the crank to your machine shop and have them polish the nick out, or at least they will let you know how serious it is. If they are a reputable shop, they won't try to screw you into getting something you don't need. I wouldn't sweat it.

This post got split up into my other one. I do have little slip covers that came with. I wasnt even putting my pistons and rods in, I was doing other things, and ploppo. I'll try the emery cloth thing first?

i wouldnt, just take it up to your machinist and have him fix it.

im guessing you had set the piston/rod on the block and it fell over and hit the crank??

dont use the engine as a workbench!!! ;)

Haha, no i had the crank on a clean towel, I was looking for a socket to get the rod cap bolts off and it just tipped! Suuuucks, Its been covered until now and look what happens ;) Im not touching this thing, the lights are out. Taking crank in, in the mornin' I was on a roll too. Clearances all checked out.

dont' worry about it, as long as they can micropolish it down, the only problem would be if there was anythign raised from the surface, and nick that is "inverted" won't do anything but collect oil in it. NO problem. Just get it so the suface is smooth

Yeah,
No problemo.
Have the machinest polish it out, and don't do that again!
When polished out, they make nice oil resiviors........
If you put the short block together yourself, be sure to use 3/8" fuel hose over the rod bolts.
Since you have never done this before, you might consider either having your machinest assemble the short, or find a buddy who has experience with this to guide you.
I have built about 10 engines myself, and believe me, when I have a ton of money in the short block, I still pay my guy to do the critical assembly.
There is no substitute for his years of experience. I figure he will catch something small that I would miss that could cause a blow up that would cost me the whole deal.
Make sense?

Thanks guys, I was really kickin myself. But I started to think and then you guys chimed in, I had thought as long as whatever got raised gets taken off it would be fine, its tiny. I just hope I dont have to wait till Monday to get it back ;) Or charged much. I'll be postin' this weekend alright, Thanks dudes tongue.gif

Hey pnutkemist, When you do the assembly torque the rods three times to burnish the rod bolt threads and to make sure the rod bolts are completely seated. What rodbolts did the machine shop use? and what torque spec for them? When I say three times I mean- torque the rod bolts then use a breaker bar to crack them loose then re torque, crack them loose, then torque them one last time. There needs to be Thread lubricant on the rod bolt and main bolt threads, and the torque spec needs to match the lube used. Make sure you're using a torque wrench that is accurate or better yet a rod bolt stretch guage if the bolts are dimpled for using one, I've seen people snap rod bolts off with a junk torque wrench-a costly mistake when the rod needs to be redone for new bolts. Take your time, study up and get everything right the first time. I hope your machine shop takes care of that nick for you without turning that journal down, it shouldn't be a big deal unless they make it one. Bob

::sigh:: Never felt greater relief than now. Not even 3 minutes and he sanded it out and im good to go. I was freaked out! I'll make sure I triple check the rod bolts, when he put them back together he sure put them on good, I dont have a work bench anymore so I'll need to find something to hold the rod/piston in so I can get the caps off. I really want to sit home this new years and play in the garage all night. We'll see hm. graemlins/beers.gif
