i am looking to convert the clock to a tach. what kit do you guys find works the best? are the ones Year One sells (http://yearone.com/serverfiles/fbshopmain2.asp?cat=0) worth the money?

Malibu sweep or SS dash? I did the SS dash one from gaugeworks and you better have a super clean signal. If it doenst work, good luck getting support. My mallory ing made my tach all funky. Since the motor swap its getting a nice signal from my LT1 computer and it works like a champ.

I bought one from www.shiftworks.com to install in my 70 Chevelle and my 72 Monte Carlo, and they work great. I have HEI dist in both so it was an easy convert. I had a freind with an MSD Dist, and he had a heck of a time trying to get it to work though. But they look better than a non working clock!

also what is the difference between the 70 and 71-72 tach? what kind of problems do you run into when converting??

The only difference between 70 and 71/72 is cosmetic: the color of the numbers and the back color. Green for 70, white numbers and blue back for 71/72.
The only problems might be your ignition and the compatibility of the tach to that ignition. Should work fine with points or HEI but might be a problem with any multi spark system like MSD.
Hook the tach up external before going to all the trouble of mounting in the dash only to find out it doesn't work.

ok...this is interesting...i have a 71 but my dash lights are green...the car was advetised as a 70 but the vin says its a 71...

I installed a unit from Shift Works in my '69, works and looks great. Price was very reasonable too.

I just looked at their site http://www.shiftworks.com/ they have a tack for a 70-72 Chevelle sweep style dash. $125.00 Fit's where the clock would go.

I used the Shiftworks tach also with a HEI distributor.
