Jim Mac Jul 2nd, 07, 12:15 AM Heck I talked to a guy about selling a 1st gen 12 bolt to him. He was suppose to drive down Wed. to pick it up. I was told its been resealed and bearinged 12 years ago. been sitting since. 3.07 gears. I was going to sell it for 800 bucks. He asked me to crack it open to make sure of the ratio. Turned out to be a 3.31 rear end. my camaro has a 3.08 open. I did email him right away, told him the rear isnt for sale, Im going to use it after all. I kind of felt bad, but if he wouldnt have asked me to open it up. I would have sold it. At emailed him 3 days in advance. jim
Tough break Adam. Deals come and go. There seems to be no courtesy or respect from buyers and sellers these days.
Joe Y Jul 2nd, 07, 1:54 AM That 69 w/ 502/502 was mild68ss' old ride. My old flowmaster exhaust is on it.
Rowdy Jul 2nd, 07, 2:15 AM In 2003, I won two consecutive ebay auctions for the same '66 SS. The seller wouldn't reveal the reserve, but finally answered a "ask seller question". The car was a project, at best, but I had a complete, option loaded Malibu with a 427/TH400/12 bolt posi that had been totalled 6 months earlier (not at fault, all front end damage). We negotiated a price and agreed on a time and date to meet. I rented a U-Haul car trailer to tow behind one of my motorhomes, loaded everything that we may need, and then some. Then me, my wife and a friend headed to Ogden, Utah (500+ miles).
When we arrived, I was informed that the old man was out of town, but his son would meet me at his home. I knew going in that the dude had a stable of nice cars, a '69 Mach 1 and a Shelby were in the background of one of the photo's on eBay. Little did I know, this guy had a couple of acres of desireable models offered during the musclecar era by the big three. Most in the cliche', "field of knee high weeds". Several more in a couple of pole barns and some really nice stuff kept in a 5 or 6 car garage, including a totally restored '70 Hemi Cuda that the kid informed me had just been picked up in Florida for a bargain, "only cost him 98 large". I'm like, "man, that's a steal at $9800". Uh.... $98K. There were also a few mid project Mopars in the driveway between the house and the garage.
Anyway, when I pull up, I'm parked right behind a '66 SS on a trailer in front of the house. I assume that it's the car that I had came after, so I start crawling around it to get a better look. The kid, probably in his late 20's, maybe late 30's, comes out to inform me that his dad had just picked that car up, the one that I was after was out back. I tell my buddy, "thank g_d, this thing's a rotted out mess".
Turns out, the cars are nearly identical. Both stripped to the bone, obviously left to the elements without windows through many a snowy winter and were definitely not "solid" or "rust free" as advertised. Granted, the pictures offered were not that encouraging in the first place. Compared to the real deal, they were incredibly flattering and like a movie trailer, strategically showed only the best parts that it had to offer, done with very tight framing and piss poor lighting.
I honestly believe that the owner made himself scarce, in an effort to avoid confrontation of the description discrepancies and figured that after travelling 500+ miles, I would bite the bullet. The closest thing to negotiating power instilled to the kid, was to give me my choice of the two cars, but firmly at the discussed price of $4K. I said,"Thanks, but no thanks" and rolled on out of there empty handed......and plenty P/O'd.
After stopping at the first convenience store to gather every classified listing available, the three of us began searching for any other 66's in the Salt Lake area.
To be cont
Rowdy Jul 2nd, 07, 4:34 AM Sorry about that, had to pick my daughter from the movies.
I was optimistic because a few months earlier there had been atleast a half dozen 66's from the Salt Lake City area in the Trader alone. We found nothing, nada, zip. Resolved to spend the night parked at a truck stop, I figured I check out an auction in the morning before heading out. It turned out to be the usual impounded late model crap.
Then the wife happened across a newly listed (1st day) '66 in the local paper. We went to check it out and it definitely had good curb appeal, the advertised price was way out of my league, $11K. The owner was expected to be home from Wyoming the next day, his wife showed it to us. The radiator was supposedly waiting to be picked up from the repair shop, so we couldn't start it.
I decided to take a chance and stayed another night, this time in a grocery store parking lot. I also had a friend deposit another $4K in my bank account back home. In the morning I made a withdrawal and headed back with $8K to offer. When I arrived, a potential buyer was looking at it. Another called after the first guy had left. The car ran good, had a mildly built 355, th350 with a 9" converter and a 10 bolt 3.73 posi. It was built as a faux race car (he also had a '67 Chevelle as a dedicated bracket racer), with Toyota high back buckets and sheet metal door panels. It was a California A/C car (all removed), he had bought it in Arizona a couple of years earlier, so rust was minimal.
He was dead set at not taking less than $9K. I got it for the $8K cash and the Ruger P90 45 ACP that I happened to have with me. As soon as I got home, I started tearing it apart to start swapping out parts. I still think that it was a little over priced, but after selling off the engine, as well as, whatever else deemed expendable, it all kinda worked itself out. The SS from Ogden would have easily ate the same 8 grand in body work and paint alone.
Just thought I'd share my own trials and tribulations of out of town car purchases. The car that you were considering was pretty nice, but equally pricey. I think something similar at a much more reasonable price will come along. Just be patient, vigilant in the search, but patient in acquisition. The above adventure was preceeded by 8 months of relentlessly searching classifieds nationwide and included 2 disappointing trips to California and one to Arizona to check out potential candidates.
Best of luck to you.
grovey Jul 2nd, 07, 11:05 AM Keep your chin up adam you'll find one. Sounds like there's alot of war stories here. here's mine.I found a 66 ss online in ga. I'm in pa. Car looked pretty decent in the pics. fresh 454/400 . Talked to him on the phone, and assured me it was a "nice car" and i could drive it home.5500 was the price. Even talked to this guys mother. She said it was a "very nice car" and she was proud to ride in it. I got the old someone else is coming to see it too story. first come first serve he says. I loaded up the family and rented a trailer. This was a week after katrina. Gas was sky high if ya could find it down there! Anyway car was nothing like the pics that were definitly taken YEARS before. no cowl hood, missing half the trim tag. plaid seats, stock type steel wheels in stead of the ralleys in the pics with dry rotted tires. Missing half the chrome now. etc etc. I spent close to 500.00 to drive there, rent the trailer and hotel room. This car was in the sticks. Guy lived in a plywood and tarpaper shack! But he drove a brand new hd 2500 bbc truck! I don't even see how he got the car down the logging trail to the shack where he lived ! I said not interested. He says did mom tell you that i dropped the price to 4500. Still not interested. So i left pissed off. Drove home stopping at a truckstop in va to eat. Picked up a local classified rag, got home opened it up ,and there was the 66ss i own now. Next day i was back in va looking at it. What a difference between the cars, and people selling them. Everyones opinion of a nice car is differant. Only advice i can give ya is ya can't believe half of what your told or even see online, but ya gotta follow thru as quickly as possible incase it is true cause it won't be there long. Think of it this way, atleast you didn't drive all the way there to lose out on it.
Sid Coleman Jul 2nd, 07, 2:05 PM **in a Cartman voice** "He needs a swift kick IN THE NUTS!!"

Yeah,I know, had a long talk with him about the car last week.
Adam Loose Jul 2nd, 07, 5:32 PM Sorry to hear Adam
You'll find one maybe it'll be better than this car.
Yep.I'm hoping to find something even better at Super Chevy this month, but I can't help to still wonder about the car.It was pretty much setup exactly the way I wanted a 69.I wonder if the new onwer will pop up on here ;)
I think the guy should have called you but I also think you have to reflect back and in the future call the seller before picking up the rental...
Junkyard Dawg Jul 2nd, 07, 5:48 PM So I'm supposed to go look at a chevelle in Ohio this sunday, talk to the guy last week,we set up the day and time, etc. And I say if anything changes to call me,because I was renting a car,and he said ok.So today I pick up the rental, and call the guy to confirm everything, and he tells me he sold it,never called me,now I'm out the money for the rental.

See what happens when you "sell" your Chevelle ?
That is kind of crazy, but the guy is probably the last bit concerned with your problems. Either that or he figured you're another "talking bull****ter" that makes it sound as if you're interested when you're only dreaming....have a few like that right now I'm dealing with...
