I seen this on ebay and asked the seller for some information about the alt, this is his response...

"We purchased new 14 years ago and did not use due to changing from a 396 to a 502. Recently bench tested producing over 80 amps at 13.7 volts. I believe this unit is rated at 100 amps but I did not care to stress the unit just to check it max amperage output."

Wouldn't a 396 and a 502 use the same alt?
If this alt too old to be worth it even though it hasn't been used?

As long as the brushes are not corroded and it spins freely it should be fine. I agree, I would expect the alternator to work for all one wire setups. Maybe they converted to serpentine belts or something. If you are looking for a cheap shiny one you might check with DBelectrical (seller on Ebay) as they usually have some deals. I have had one of their Chrome alternators on Old Blue for years. The price on the one you linked is getting up there already.

Thank You, I did a quick search and found a new chrome alternator for right around 60.00. The one I listed is polished aluminum though, but either way works for me.

You'll be wanting Chrome.

Polished Aluminum takes lots of work to keep show quality.

Maybe so, but I do like polished aluminum. Also if cleaned and sealed correctly it will last quite a while before cleaning is necessary. Secondly, the car isn't anywhere neer show quality, just wanted a little bling while I was at it. In the end it is Amperage and price that I am looking at first. Chrome or Polished doesn't matter to me either way. ;)

Thank You,

I bought a Polished Alternator from OPG. 63 Amp-works perfect and I think looks better than the Chrome ones that everyone installs. I didn't want the alternator getting all the attention when my engine compt is chromed already. Your choice but I personally like polished...

I bought a show quality polished and rebuilt original for $30. Don't have any chrome under my hood :D

Many chrome units I have seen have started pitting over time. A big reason I bought a polished unit. I dont mind polishing.
