Has anyone seen a dash (-) where the paint color is suppose to be? If so what color do you suppose it should be? The car is black with black vinyl top and red interior. Thanks Edd

That would have been a "special order" paint from the factory. Could have been part of a fleet order (taxis, etc.). Most common today is a 69 COPO done up in one of the "SS Specific" colours of Monaco Orange or Daytona Yellow which carried that "-" paint code. If there is no build sheet, perhaps somewhere on the body you can find some original paint. I for one would certainly be interested in knowing what the colour was, maybe it was a Cadillac colour or something.

If there is no original paint in the door jams or under the trunk lid, check under the carpet. You will find some original paint there.

The upside to the special order paint is you can paint it any color GM had access to in 1969 including Ford or MoPar colors except some Cadillac paints that had a coarse metallic content. The red interior may limit some of the available choices (I assume it's a factory red interior?) such as Pontiac's Verdoro Green (often called Firebird Green) probably wouldn't work out too well. :D

The downside is you can't paint it any standard 69 Chevelle color and be 'correct'. Unless you're doing a 100% correct restoration though, have fun and paint it whatever color you want.

Thank ya boys. I do not know if this is good news or bad. I bought the care to sell, it has car and it has correct engine, rear, carb and dist, FM radio, speed control and the stero kick panels. I believed it was an original black car until someone pointed out the dash on the trim tag, (old eyes). Oh well it still is a very nice car. It will make someone very happy even if it is not the correct color. Thanks again. Edd

What year car?

Some years black paint was not standard color, so it could be black?

I always forget to look up at the topic title too Mike.

What engine does it have Ed?
Maybe it's a COPO ??

Pull the front a-pillar covers off and see what color is behind them. Noone ever paints behind them when they do a color change.

Either deletion of a stripe or use of a non-standard stripe color was also considered to be special paint

Either deletion of a stripe or use of a non-standard stripe color was also considered to be special paintThat wouldn't be noted with - - on the trim tag though. It'd be noted on the build sheet something like 'Stripe Delete' or 'Special Strip Color' and build sheet would definately have XXX CUSTOMER ORDER at the bottom. ;)

But since it is a '69 the only thing that could apply to is a Malibu (double pinstripe) non-SS, since any '69 with the SS option didn't include stripes unless RPO D88 was ordered.

Well, I pulled the window pillar, and removed a seat, and it is a whitish color, it looks more like a sealer than a paint color. This is very puzzleing. I know that white was a color used in 69. Oh well. Thanks for all the comments and help. Edd

Pull the door panel should be alot of original paint on top of the door.

The code 50 white used in 1969 is an off-white. Possibly someone wanted a brighter white on their car, and special ordered a truck white or something simular.

Dave you may be right, but my impression of a white car, black vinyl top and red interior is not very high, but whatever floats your boat. But man does this car look good black. Edd
