: Installed Performer RPM Air-Gap intake...now alternator bracket won't work
70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 22nd, 03, 12:26 AM As the topic implies...I just swapped my old regular Performer intake out. In it's place, now resides a Performer RPM Air-Gap. BUT, now my alternator bracket won't work. I can see "why", but what's the "solution"?
Has this happened to anyone else? What bracket do I need to look for to make this work? I never even thought about this when I started the project and all had gone well (only 1 last minute trip to the parts store smile.gif ) up till then.
I had one more snafu that I'll putting in another post (Engine Forum), but I was really hoping to fire her back up tonite. Ah, well if everything went back together as planned it wouldn't quite be a typical gearhead afternoon, would it?
Any suggestions on replacement brackets would be much appreciated. Thanks!
ZZ69chevelle Nov 22nd, 03, 12:35 AM BB or SB?
70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 22nd, 03, 12:41 AM Bah, sorry. Meant to add in there, that this is a 355 small block. No PS, no AC, no nothing. Stock-type alternator with internal voltage regulator. Is there anything else that might help out? Thanks for the quick response!
ZZ69chevelle Nov 22nd, 03, 12:45 AM I'm not cretain, but I think the water passages are raised like the Victor intake, aren't they? If so I think you'll need a different bracket than the factory piece, but I'm sure someone else will come along and prove me wrong. smile.gif
EDIT: according to Edelbrock's site, "Accepts all 1976 and later alternator and A/C brackets for the street"
bryan thomas Nov 22nd, 03, 12:53 AM if you have heads with front mount accessory holes go with the summit alternator kit
It is the same thing as march only not billet but it is cheaper only 59$ !
it is what i did and the turnbuckle holds the alt belt tight and straight
it will work with long water pumps and heads with front holes !!

70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 22nd, 03, 12:59 AM Hmmmm. Well, this is on my 70 and I'm using a stock replacement water pump. SOOO, it should be a long one. According to what you found ZZ69 (real name? smile.gif ), it looks like I'll need one from 1976-up. Anyone have any idea as to whether a late 70's pickup bracket or from anything else will work? Are all the SBC alternator brackets the same, for all vehicles during that period?
Thanks for heading me in the right direction, ZZ! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 22nd, 03, 1:12 AM Ya beat me with those posts, Brian. smile.gif That's a nice setup from Summit. What kiiinda sux is that I have access to all the stuff there except the small bracket itself. I can get all the hardware and the turnbuckle at work for nothing ;) .
Don't suppose you could get me some accurate measurements on the bracket? I might be able to have a friend at work fab me one up.
If that isn't possible, I may look around for a cheap bracket off of a pickup or something. IF THAT doesn't work....then I'll be calling Summit. I know it would sure look better than all the other options.
Thanks to the both of you for all the quick info!
bryan thomas Nov 22nd, 03, 1:18 AM let me know what dimensions you need you see the shape on summit's site just email them to me and i will get back to you

Fuji Nov 22nd, 03, 10:15 AM Justin,
Is your alternator mounted in front of the passenger side head? And is your bracket the kind with two mounting points - one to the water pump and one to the intake? If this is the case, you can just cut off the portion of the bracket that has the mounting hole for the intake. One bolt to water pump is plenty adequate. I can send you a pic of my modified bracket and installation if you are interested.
oldude Nov 22nd, 03, 10:31 PM justin can you send me that pic? thanks

70_FathomBlueMalibu Nov 23rd, 03, 1:38 AM I DO have the bracket that bolts to the water pump and the thermostat housing. And yes, it's located in front of the passenger side head. The heads are Canfield, btw.
But, guys, I was thinking about it. In that pic, I realize that I don't need that bracket. That would replace my lower one and that's not my problem. What I need is the replacement for the upper bracket and that would be where the spherical rod ends and the turnbuckle come in....right?
I hope that my thinking is correct. I checked the parts room at work and I can get the spherical rods with male ends. I can get the bolts, lock nuts, a spacer (will have to be cut to fit, probably), washers....everything, EXCEPT the turnbuckle. HOWEVER, they do have aluminum bar stock. So, I talked to a machinist/fabricator friend at work and he said he can make it no problem. graemlins/hurray.gif
So, Bryan, all I guess I need to know is, how long is the turnbuckle and how long is the spacer for the bolt at the water pump? With any luck, I won't be out more than a $5 bill (for my friend at work).
I do need to remember to have him thread it left hand at one end and right hand at the other. Correct?
If any of my thinking is wrong, someone set me straight. smile.gif
