Specific to a '68 SS, the 3 and 4-speed drivetrains used the same default and option axle ratios. Let me elaborate further: The base L35 (396/325) would use a 3.31 rear with manual transmissions. The optional L34 (396/350) would use a 3.55 ratio with manual transmission. Optional ratios for manual transmissions were available up to 4.10, but on the hotter 396 you could also specify an M21 close-ratio trans. With the M21 you might even be able to order ratios up to 4.56 or even 4.88. The '68 choices were like the '67 choices, but in '69 things were re-assigned a little, with 3.55s being used with manual transmission by default regardless of h.p. rating. I don't know about '68, but in '67 all factory big-block Chevelles with factory air conditioning came with only 1 axle ratio; the 3.07:1.
