I am the proud owner of a 1967 Chevelle (396ci, 4 speed, torch red) that is going back together. My problem is with the rear trim. I can’t see from my pictures how the rear tail light bezels and the trim work in relationship to each other. After goofing around with it for a few hours, I called a local shop. They told me that the rear tail light bezels go over (on top of) the two trim pieces that mount on the body below the trunk lid. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this or knows how it should go back together. Man, it’s much easier to take apart, than to put back together!

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Jason,

Thank you VERY much for the reply. This weekend I will attempt to put all the pieces back together.

Thank you again,

Ron

Well, the rear trim FINALLY went back together. The advice that I was given was 100% INCORRECT. As it turns out, the trim pieces go OVER the rear taillight bezel. I went to the Twilight Cruise at the Pomona Fairgrounds in California and witnessed 3 (three) 1967 Chevelles where the end of the taillight bezels are covered by the upper and lower painted trim pieces.

One other note, the reproduction taillight bezels do not fit as well as the originals.

The upper and lower horizontal trim pieces do go over the taillamp bezels. Did your paint shop redo the area above the top trim piece to the trunk weatherstripping in the correct black like the rear cove? Many shops paint this area the same as the lower body color which is incorrect. There were three different patterns used for this blacked-out area as well.

The bezels came with the seal/gasket ($12.95 for the pair), but I think that is where the problem is. If I mount the bezels alone, they fit better. I am hesitant to trim the seal/gasket since I could trim too much and end up with the bezels against the paint. If I remember correctly the semi black is painted between the mounting holes of the mouldings. It sounds like this maybe incorrect. Back to the paint shop we go……

Right. To be 'correct', the same black that fills the rear cove between the taillamps extends to the weatherstripping under the trunk lid. Three variations so for have been found. FWIW, the Malibu series also had this blacked out area between the upper trim piece and weatherstripping. :) There are quite a few examples on my reference CD.
