Ok, my heads are fine but I want to go faster so it's time to look for a replacement. I'm planning a cam swap so it's a good time for heads too. Car is a 67 Chevelle with a 1972 350 LT-1. Head casting numbers are 3973487 which is a 76 cc head yielding 9.0 compression as far as I can tell. These heads were good in their day but I'm sure that I can find an aftermarket head that will flow much better. I need to know what my options are. I'd like better compression but still run on pump gas, so I'd guess 9.5 compression will be the max? What is out there that will give me better flow?

AFR 195
They are very good heads if you are willing to spend the money, so that become the #1 question how much do you plan on spending on the combo. I will also match the cam and heads to the rest of your combo.

I'd like to spend less than 1 grand on a set of heads. I intend to use the car on the street. I'll go to the track for fun, but not often. The previous owner put in a cam that is way to agressive along with a direct drive cam gear which I hate (noise). My goal is to get the engine tuned for the street with good power up to 5800 rpm or so. I'm installing a 5 speed tremec soon and want to wind up the gears, but don't want to sacrifice low end grunt with a big cam. The vortec heads look like a good deal, but the 64cc chamber seems to be too small for my block. I'm looking for 70cc or larger to keep the compression in a streetable range. Edelbrock seems to have a good package deal but the prices are high.

My sons 355 is running flat tops with 4 valve reliefs with his vortecs, detonation is a problem with anything less than 93 octane. Ya can't argue with mid 13's in a 81 chevy truck though.
