Hey Robert, we'll be at the fairgrounds Saturday checking out the cars and watching the Dyno pulls. Planning on going to watch the races later in the day. I want to try and find Harold Sutton's boy's chevelle and check it out this year.

Hi 505, He's going to be there. I'm looking for a little over 900 H. P. on the juice as it pulled 888 last year and he just added a vacuum pump. It'll be a dark metallic green '70 chevelle with big white stripes. See you all there.

I'll be in a Red/Black 70 SS that still has a lot of the original paint on it, not nice yet but it's still fun to have down there! Come say Hi if you see me.

Harold, did you have the green 70 with the 540 last year? I talked to you right before you went on the dyno if that was you. I'll see ya this year for sure.

Robert, Hopefully it won't rain this year and mine will actually come off the trailer on Friday night!

Hi 70ss, Yes my son car is dark green. Seems like there were two dark green '70 Chevelles there but my sons has the 4" Glastech hood with big white racing stripes and yes it has a 540 right now. They got him on the rollers crooked and his pull only netted a 636 H.P. on the motor and,(888 on N2O). Two other trips to our local Dynojets resulted in a readings of 646 H.P. The yellow '70 Chevelle that beat my son on the N/A part is on page 63 of the January 2004 Car Craft Magazine and belonged to a friend of my son's, Mike King, at the time. It has since changed hands twice since. King traded it to another local who hounded my son into a street race, which my son won. Torque wins races and peak horsepower doesn't mean squat without mid range torque. The 9.20 that was bragged about was on nitrous, not raw. The black Camaro on the same page is BAD,BAD,BAD. (7.49 @ 186+ MPH.) and has gained 16 MPH trap speed since last year. The Camaro has stated he is going to shut the Dyno down this year. Is that possible?

I'll be there with my ride terrorizing Chevelles and harassing their owners. :D

Right now the weather is looking great. Last year I got caught out in the rain with slicks on the car, it let up enough so I could get home. I have my drag radials on now so it won't rain graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The Black Camaro is extremely wicked! I had to follow him around the fairgrounds last year(talk about stealing your thunder) didn't he lay down like 1200 hp last year? Should be a fun year, hope to see you all down there. I just got a new job since getting out of college, so I'm hoping I'll be down there half way early friday evening if I can get off of work at a decent time.

Hi Matt, Last year Brian Gaines' Camaro "only" made "1096 RWHP" and the car was running 8 teens at 170 M.P.H. at Tulsa. He was beaten at our shootout races by Stan "the man" Williams in his "632 powered", 85 Camaro, at a couple of races so this year he has reworked his combo and changed to a high helix blower and at the race just run here he ran 7.49 @ 186+. Patrick Hale's formula shows 1650 Flywheel Horsepower so he's going to go off of the top of the chart for sure.

Bob4Prez, What kind of car do you have? To anyone who has never been to the Car Craft Fall Street Machine Nationals in Springfield, Mo. your missing the highest powered Dyno Challenge in the U.S.A. I'd like to see some of the cars from up North come down here and watch or participate this coming Saturday as it is quite an event with the Friday night cruise and all.

Sep 14th, 04, 11:55 PM
Along with the dyno challenge the cruising is one of the best parts Friday and Saturday. Hopefully the cruising will be going on late, b/c I might not roll into town until 8-9.

I use to go to that event every year. Until the management of the fairgrounds changed hands, and a some beiotch harrassed us all weekend. I'll never go back, graemlins/angry.gif . Just one example; she actually asked us if we were going to pick up some peanut shells that we through on the ground, keep in mind, this was OUTSIDE.

Not a big fan of "Family Events" either.

They even F'ed up the Power Tour at that stop this year.

I'll stick with GoodGuys KC next weekend. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Rapid, whereabouts in SW MO are you? I drive through SW MO every other weekend now (work in Jeff City, but home is just north of Tulsa).

Harold, how is your job situation working out? I know last time we talked it didn't sound good. My situation got better...of course I had to go out of state to find decent employment. Did you ever see Larry Peabodys '56 chevy? Now that he is retired, he is working on it full time. Should be real sweet when he gets it done.

Hi Travis, I'm still technically employed but still no work, at least for me. I guess that means my vehicle is going to last a lot longer though. Just staying home and mowing the grass. I was wondering how you were doing. The big Car Craft Fall Street Machine Nationals are this weekend and i'm going up with a friend and his son to watch the Dyno Challenge. My son put a vacuum pump on the "540" and changed the torque converter to a nitrous one. He also changed the roller lifters to "Isky Red Zones", as suggested by our friend, Mike Lewis (Wolfplace) . I don't know how much nitrous he intends to use but if the pull only lasts a couple of seconds it should be O.K. (900+ H.P. coming up). Are you going up? Brian Gaines of Coweta has said he is going to max out the Dyno with his double bad, blown '67 Camaro. By the way, Peabody's Chevy is a red and cream '55 two door and he's finally started working on it.

Harold, your right...it is a '55. Did he tell you he just fired up that 20+ year old 327 crate motor for the 1st time? I still can't believe that thing didn't blow oil out of every gasket on it.
Unfortunately, I won't be at the nats. My wife and kid is still in Skiatook and with a 5-6 hour drive each way, the weekends just aren't long enough as it is. Yeah, I know ALL about mowing  Although now my wife knows how to work the riding mower :D
RR, I was just curious about your whereabouts. I have already met several of the tema camaro and team chevelle members up here in Jeff City, and met a few in the Tulsa area also. Its always good to know where the car guys are...especially since when I start talking cars here at work people look at me like I have 3 ears or something :D

Harold, didn't you boys car make hot rod magazine a couple of years ago? I remember something about a dyno challenge and the OK boys was putting on a heck of a show.

Harold Sutton
Sep 16th, 04, 1:34 AM
Hi Travis, Yeah they reported that my boy bet a guy named Mike King $500.00 on the Dyno results which makes a nice story but it wasn't anywhere near that much, i think a hundred might have changed hands. The funny thing is that my son beat the yellow car that outpowered him on the Dyno, on two different occasions. Do you come south through Camdenton and Lebanon? I worked up around the Lake of the Ozarks two different occasions when i worked for Western Electric, once at Camdenton ('66) and then at Eldon & Osage Beach in ('67). I bought the then new '67 - 375 H.P. Chevelle that i still have at Eldon. Too bad this isn't your "off weekend" as the happening at the fairgrounds and Dyno pulls are great and the cars cruising Glenstone are fun to watch. I had a great time last year. P.S. - The lake area sure has changed since i worked there. I didn't even recognize it when i went thru there a couple of years ago.

I got back from Springfield, Mo. last night and wanted to say Hi to the guys who stopped by my sons car and introduced themselves. Got some good information and saw some nice cars. '40 coupes little red Chevy is extremely nice. I've seen no bodywork or paint any nicer anywhere, or any time, definately first rate and a great color red. (Red's my favorite color). It was also great to meet 505Nova and exchange information with him and fun to meet Matt and his dad. If iv'e left anybody out i appologize as advancing age and declining memory are my constant companions. Brian Gaines' Camaro maxed out the 1200 Horsepower Dyno at around 4800 RPM and went straight to 1200 ft. lbs. of tq. at the hit. They didn't take the engines as high as last year. My son's Chevelle made 924 H.P. and 738 ft. lbs. of torque. They started the pull at 5000 RPM and went to 7200. and both pulls were extremely close to the same. I think he pulled too much timing out trying to make it safe and gave up some power in the proccess. The cars fuel system needs some re-engineering also as the fuel pressure fluctuates when a high demand is put on it. His friend DeWayne's gold colored 593" Camaro made 1013 RWHP. A good time was had by all. I don't know if they are going back out to the Fairgrounds today or not. The Car Craft people didn't seem to be anywhere around this year and i guess they have lost interest but plenty of spectators haven't. Wake up Car Craft! Anybody wanting to see most of the Tulsa cars can come to the shootout race on Oct. 16 at Tulsa Raceway Park, 3101 N. Garnett in Tulsa. This racetrack is right beside HWY 169 between Apache and 36th Street North in Tulsa, Ok. (3 miles north of the 244 & 169 junction on HWY 169).

Was nice meeting ya Harold! Great being able to put faces to names. Your son's car was pretty darn cool and make some killer power.

Seen him again late last night just after a blue Drag Radial Chevelle wrecked bad at Ozark. I'm pretty sure the guy's throttle stuck WFO - he spun bad at the line and never let out, got sideways crossed the line and hit the Camaro in the other lane. Spun around and hopped up on the guardrail. Luckly didn't get hurt but was sickening to see. I know the guy was having problems with his throttle cable, when we were in the pits earlier he was working on it becuase it wouldn't open up fully - he must have messed it up fixing it. Sure a shame to see two beautiful cars trashed like the just becuase of a bad throttle cable setup.

Sep 19th, 04, 2:11 PM
Was Harolds son at the track? There was a couple of my friends about half way back in the pits, spent most of the time talking to them, blue and silver Monte Carlo and Multi colored Malibu both in drag radial,,,Monte won one round,Malibu blew a head gasket(he thinks) in his new 565.

Yeah, I saw him over on the Spec side, he got there about the time the wreck happened. Guess I missed you over by Ricks Car, we stopped by and BS'd for a while with Rick but I didn't see you or James at the time.

Man that was a long drive home! Rolled into the driveway about 4am Ugh.

Sep 19th, 04, 4:10 PM
I kinda figured my son would go to the Drag Strip after they left the fairgrounds on sat., as he is a night owl, but i went to the house with the two guys i rode up with. My son tried those Drag Radials once and after skating all over the track he gave them, or what was left of them, away to another friend with a less powerful car. Our strip is in really nice shape now and i would encourage anybody that wants some killer E.T.s to come down to the October 16 shootout race. I bet the strip is going to be sticky and its supposed to cool off very soon.

I'd love to try Tulsa in the near future. We have a two day Fall bracket bash this coming weekend, then race every weekend in October to finish the season. When does Tulsa close for winter? I got home at 4 a.m. also, but I stayed to the bitter end, man what a long day.

Harold Sutton
Sep 20th, 04, 12:08 AM
Hi Robert, The last shootout race is Oct.16 and i don't know what is planned after that. There has been a lot of friction over the lack of a crowd since this new owner has renovated the track. I think he thought the track was going to take right off and he was going to make bundles of money. He's kind of a jerk and has made a lot of people mad so the crowds keep getting smaller and i frankly don't know if the strip will even open next season. I think the shootout race promises to have good traction and a good turnout. Now if they just don't have a bunch of oildowns so they can keep the crowd interested. My son did go out to the strip but said he got sick-to-his stomach and went back to the motel. After talking to him earlier i'm not so sure he's going to race again. He said it's hard to keep his girl happy and race too. That's O.K. by me as his two little boys have to be his first priority. Anyhow, anybody wanting to race on a really good track should come to Tulsa before it's too late. Good racing wherever you race. He said someone doorbanged his race car at the motel before he got back from the dragstrip.

Harold, I would love to come out to Tulsa with you pro's but this job siuation has got my life all screwed up right now. Damn shame too...I got all the issues worked out of the nova's 388 and it is running really good. Of course, with these scrawny street tires, I would just be putting on some smokey mid 13 second shows

Harold,

It was nice meeting you and your son, I got a lot of good ideas from his car! Very nice car and impressive numbers!

Robert-I saw your car in the mall parking lot I thought around 11:30 or 12 Friday night, we cruised through there I just didn't know who anybody was. Good looking car! I had the red/black 70 with the black vinyl top that is in really really old paint. I knew a guy racing a yellow Pro Street 69 Camaro who said there were some wild wrecks on Saturday night. He was running 4.75 I believe.

See you guys next year!

It was nice to meet all the people who came by. Sorry i didn't meet you, Rapid Robert, maybe next year. I understand your situation Travis, as it's a long drive to Jefferson City, Mo. every other weekend. They keep changing the rules at the shootouts down here so i think that along with living with a self centered woman will probably sideline my son for quite some time to come, maybe permanently. Travis, you will like the strip if you get to go out there. It really is nice, just terribly mismanaged.

Hi 505Nova, This track has about the longest shutdown of anywhere i've ever been. That makes for trouble free stopping even with mediocre brakes and since the strip was repaved recently and ground flat it is said to be extremely smooth. The weather is starting to cool off so many fastest runs should be had. The rules are posted on the TRP website: (tulsaracewaypark.com) should get you there. I think this race is going to be a full quarter mile long but you can get on the website for free and ask any necessary questions. Low 9s should give you a chance at doing well and the strip should be able to handle anything you throw at it.
