I just purchased a 1965 chevelle 300 deluxe that said on the VIN number that it was a V8 model, but the car has an inline six engine that looks like it belonged there from the start. Everything about the car looks like it all belongs together, same paint, etc. What could be the explanation for this and how can I further check to see if the motor or even the body belongs together. Thanks for the help.

Post the 3rd digit of the VIN from the tag on the door jam.

It's very possible that your VIN has been swapped some time in the past. You may have a stolen vehicle and you should ask the seller to take the car back and return your money to you. If you don't go this route, I would recommend you contact the Indiana DMV and have them check for the hidden VIN on your car and run that against the stolen vehicles in the database. The last thing you want to do is sink ANY money into a car that MAY be stolen.

What are you calling the VIN?

The plate on the A pillar or the plate under the hood?

The plate on the A pillar. The tag on the firewall is the cowl tag.

You're thinking the same thing I was Mike.
That's why I said "tag on the door jam"

Also possible the vin does go with his car

Ran the VIN on my 59 Elky---Came back as a 6cyl Sedan Delivery----I think not!

Cowl tag showed v8 Elky tho

The style number on the Fisher Body plate (a.k.a. cowl tag, trim tag, firewall tag) does not indicate V8 or 6-cylinder status - only the VIN plate (on the a-pillar or front of dash). I have quite a few 65-67 Fisher Body plates with an even 3rd-digit style number and the VIN shows an odd 3rd-digit number indicating a 6-cyl engine.

It does seem to be more prevalent on the 300/300 Deluxe series cars than Malibus but I've seen on several Malibus and even a couple of 65 Malibu SS cars; 13837 body plate and 13737 VIN. A Baltimore example of a Malibu SS can be seen at the bottom of this page on my site.
