: Clutch break in?

I just rebuilt by motor and bought a new Zoom Hi-Performance clutch kit and the instructions say to break in the clutch for 700 miles but it doesn't give any specifics like RPM ranges or anything. This seemed kind of weird because you could make a couple of long trips on highway/interstate and hardly shift or use the clutch. I was just wondering if anyone new anything about breaking in a clutch or any specific break in procedures or if it is even necessary.....Thanks!

The last clutch I bought had the same break-in mileage and it called out stop and go traffic for the break-in.

Ryan just avoid unnecessary slipping or riding of the clutch. I wouldn't recommend any burn outs and just do some normal stop and go driving. Allow some cooling time in between as a few heat cycles will help....Pretty much the same as new brake pads don't abuse them for a bit and things will be fine. I've have never waited 700 miles before (REALLY) testing mine. Good Luck

Does it matter what RPM's you shift at?

Ryan I normally keep mine below 3 thousand or so for the first few trips. Avoiding the slippage and excess heat would be the biggest factor.

I break mine in at 7000 RPM , applying all the energy through a 3.05 first gear , 5.67 ring and pinion to 28 inches of sticky hot rubber ........and if it wasnt for wheelie bars....it'd rip the back bumper "clean off"! :D

Actually...just drive it in a sensible manner........
Its not likely to chatter or give any trouble at all.

I'd say put it on the chip, & slide your foot off the pedal!!http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/aktion/action-smiley-035.gif

Just moderate intown driving. But you won't make it to 700 miles before putting your foot into it. NOBODY ever does...........:D

Ryan,

No matter what any of us think or say, the correct way to break in the clutch is the way that Zoom tells you to do it. Pick up the phone and call them and follow thier directions.

Just my opinion,

A "philosophical" answer indeed.

I'm also in the process of breaking in a clutch and was told 450 to 500 miles of normal driving. If a lot of my miles are highway, then I have to be closer to the 500 because of not using the clutch as much.I don't do burnouts or launch but do drive it normal and don't powershift. BTW mine is a Centerforce DF and it only calls for 450 to500 mi for breakin.
I was falling on the floor at some of the responses above. Some of you guys are a trip and funny. Good ones!!!!

Do exactly what zoom tells you my experience with them is they tend to chatter.
