Is a 402 truck motor out of a 71 Chevy truck a worthwhile investment to rebuild and put in my chevelle? Will my 290 heads fit as well as a Performer RPM intake etc...? I know a 454 would be better but if the price is right, could it work?
Thanks

Should be a standard 8.5 or so low compression car motor, but in a P/U, imho.
A good foundation if you don't want to step up to a 454 core motor..
It may bore to 4.25" if you want to sonic check it and try to turn it into a stock 454..

Should be about the same L34 motor as what was in your 70...Maybe alittle less compression..

my first 402 came out of a 1970 c-10 pick up................bone stock and used oil it ran 14's thru the 1/4 mile in my stock 81 camaro with 2.56 gears many many years ago.............
lol i remember the day i bought the old motor i was a teenager full of energy i went to the guys house paid him cash for it plus the trade of my 350 sbc and did the engine swap in his front yard with the motors hangin from a tree..........i put the 402 in my car with no exhaust hooked up and a cobled up mess under the hood.......drove thaqt sucker 20 miles to get to town and finish the job...........the pay off was great in my eyes........10 mph faster in the 1/4 mile it was worth it...............

If your 402 is a 289 casting it will bore safely to a 4.185 bore and no more - unless you are into paper thin cylinder walls. The block will need a fair amount of grinding to fit the 454 crank in it. I have looked at this ten different ways and thought we had everything figured out, but in the end, either rebuild it as a 402 or go get a 454 block. Depending on what you're going to do, the 402 motor will still make plenty of power and as long as the rotating assembly {crank, rods, pistons} are still usable, then use the 402. If you have to replace all of these, the 454 is just a lest expensive proposition in the end.
3/1/04 - my mistake, the 289 casting is a 454 block, the 290 casting is the 402 truck block that will only work as a 4.185" max bore.

Scott,you can use your heads,cam/lifters,and intake..probably around 9.5 to 1 compression..should work fine.
