Harold,

Can you help identify a cam for me? I pulled the timing cover today to change my gear set and found that I have a Lunati Cam in my 72 LT-1 small block. Here is what is stamped on the cam:

03ND
109

00010

Thanks.

Thank for the response. What compression ratio would be a minimum to run with this cam?

Imho, start at 10.25 to 1 and it will run better at 11 to 1 CR..

I have the Melling PN CRV-1(??) that's probably the same cam in my about 9.5 to 1, 406 SB and it is a little low on compression, but once above, say 2500 rpm she starts going pretty good..

Of course, my 3.31's and 26.5" tall tires didn't help it outta the hole...

With 292 advertised dur. it's going to want some compression. 10.5 to 10.75 would probably be sweet. What do you want from the motor performance wise?

Comp has a cam with the same lift but less duration and would probably take less compression than your Lunati.

Heads are stamped 3973487, 75 CC heads and flat top pistons. Compression is no where near 10 to 1, so that explains the soft bottom end power? Car pulls strong up to 6,000 rpm, but down low it is a bit mushy. My plans are to swap the heads out for Vortecs. It looks like this Lunati cam is not a good match for vortecs, so I'll probably change the cam while I'm in there. Performance wise I'd like the car to run mid to low 13's on drag radials. With 355 gears and a 5 speed this should not be to hard to accomplish once I get the heads and cam installed.

I'm running the same cam now in a 11:1 355 and I have ran it in a 9:1 327. Cam makes good power but it is old school. You can get more power and street comfort with a newer cam. I will run it the rest of the year to see if I can get the car in the 11's in cooler air(12.20's in the heat, carb too fat) then I'm going solid.
